"Great crowd. Great enthusiasm in the gym," WVU coach
Mike Carey said. "Those kids did a great job. I wasn't happy with ball movement, (I) wasn't happy with today at all. Give Coppin State a lot of credit. They came in and played hard. We just don't have enough ball movement. We've got too many people just (going) one-on-one all the time. Nobody's setting up anybody. We had 15 assists. In that type of game, we probably should have had a lot more. We should have had a lot more assists. We've got a lot of work to do, inside and out."
After Coppin State took an early lead off the opening tip, Niblack converted two at the free-throw line to tie the game at 2-2. A pair of jumpers by Martin helped the Mountaineers take their first lead of the game before Gondrezick hit a 3-pointer to stretch the WVU lead to 12-6. Four Mountaineers tacked on 11 more to close out the first period, as West Virginia took a 23-8 lead heading to the second quarter of play.
After CSU added five points to cut the Mountaineer lead to 10, Martin and Deans countered from beyond the arc to keep the Eagles at bay. Junior guard
Arleighshya McElroy connected from the 3-point range, Niblack tacked on a pair from the stripe and Gondrezick added to the lead with a layup as the West Virginia led Coppin State 37-25 at the half. Martin led all scorers with 12 points at the break.
Niblack, redshirt freshman center
Rochelle Norris and Gondrezick scored a trio of layups to open the second-half scoring, as the Mountaineers began the third quarter on a 6-2 run. With 2:30 remaining in the third, Niblack converted on an and-one to help WVU take a 22-point lead. Deans then added her third 3-pointer of the game and one more from the free-throw line, as West Virginia led 61-41 heading to the final quarter of play.
