Mountaineers Hanging Tough at Halftime
October 31, 2019 09:57 PM | Football
Seven points are all that show on the scoreboard in the first half at frigid McClane Stadium in Waco, Texas.
Those seven points came as a result of R.J. Sneed's 13-yard second quarter touchdown reception from quarterback Charlie Brewer that was initially ruled incomplete by the officials on the field. But the replay officials upstairs deemed Sneed's left foot was in bounds before his right foot hit the sideline giving Baylor the lone score of the first half.
Baylor had an opportunity to get another touchdown right before the end of the first half when the Bears had a first and goal at the 3, but WVU's defense repelled four straight Baylor cracks at the goal line.
West Virginia has gotten to Brewer three times in the first half, two by sack leader Darius Stills, and it also forced a second-quarter fumble.
The defense has really come to the aid of a Mountaineer offense that has struggled mightily to move the football. West Virginia has just 16 yards rushing on 16 attempts and quarterback Austin Kendall has completed only 9-of-21 passes for 48 yards with one interception.
"We've just got to figure it out offensively," West Virginia coach Neal Brown told MSN sideline reporter Jed Drenning before halftime.
Baylor, which deferred the opening kickoff, will receive the ball to begin the second half.
