MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University wrestling team made its first public appearance of the 2019-20 campaign, as the squad hosted wrestle-offs on Saturday afternoon, at the WVU Shell Building, in Morgantown.
"After practicing every day for the past couple of weeks it was great to get out on the mat and get some live matches in front of our fans," second-year coach Flynn said. "I'm encouraged by what I saw today. We have a lot of good, young talent and I think that showed today."
WVU's grapplers competed in a round-robin style tournament to determine the starters for the 2019-20 season, as a mixture of established veterans and talented newcomers competed in front of Mountaineer fans for the first time this year.
Junior Nick Kuissis (165) and redshirt sophomore Noah Adams (197) tallied two wins each on the day to solidify their spots on the squad after tying for the team lead with 19 wins last season.
Freshman Scott Joll impressed in his Mountaineer debut, earning wins over classmates Isaiah Casto and Mitchell Potterf to capture the 174-pound division.
Heavyweights Brandon Ngati and Sean Mullican earned a win each in the event, while sophomore Jackson Moomau took the 184 crown with a 2-0 record.
Redshirt sophomore Joey Thomas (125), sophomore Lucas Seibert (133), sophomore Caleb Rea (141), and redshirt junior Kyler Rea (149) won their respective weight classes after picking up two straight victories in a best-of-three series.
Redshirt freshman Alex Hornfeck used wins over redshirt sophomore Luke Sorboro and redshirt junior Hunter Jones to claim the top spot at 157.
West Virginia officially kicks off its 2019-20 season on Sunday, Nov. 3, at the Southeast Open. The event is set to begin at 9 a.m. at the Berglund Center in Roanoke, Virginia.
The 2019-20 schedule consists of three open tournaments, one quad meet and 12 dual matches – six of which will take place at the WVU Coliseum. The Mountaineers will wrestle in eight Big 12 duals, while hosting three. A full schedule for this season is available here.
