Mountaineers Complete Play at the Tavistock

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University golf team finished play at The Tavistock Collegiate Invitational, hosted by the Mountaineers and UCF, at Isleworth Golf and Country Club in Windermere, Florida, on Tuesday.
After struggling through the first day of competition, the Mountaineers couldn't overcome the deficit and finished 27-over-par to land in 15th place with a final team score of 303-293-295=891. UCF took home the tournament title at 22-under-par for a final team score of 280-275-287=842.
"This was not our best showing so far this season, but I believe in these guys," WVU coach Sean Covich said. "They've played a lot of good golf so far. We just had an off week, and that's my fault. I have to get them better prepared. I'm looking forward to a few days back home to get some work in and get ready for the final tournament of the fall."
Senior Etienne Papineau paced WVU, finishing tied for 33rd with a score of 78-70-72=220 for four-over-par. Papineau balanced three birdies with three bogeys to shoot even par in the final round of play. With an even showing on Tuesday, he jumped nine spots on the leaderboard to earn the top finish for the Mountaineers
Junior Logan Perkins finished one stroke behind Papineau, shooting two-over in the third round to finish in a tie for 38th. Perkins turned in scores of 72-75-74=221 to post five-over-par for the tournament. After teeing off on No. 10, he balanced two bogeys with two birdies on the back nine, but carded two bogeys on the front nine to end the round plus-two.
Freshman Nico Lang jumped 14 spots in the third round to finish tied for 48th after shooting one-under-par in the final round of play. Lang finished seven-over-par for the tournament with a score of 76-76-71=223.
Junior Matthew Sharpstene finished the round seven-over to land in 66th place with a 54-hole total of 77-72-79=228. Sharpstene teed of on No. 10 and struggled on the back nine, carding two doubles and a bogey.
Junior Mark Goetz finished in 74th place with a three-round total of 80-78-78=236 to total 20-over-par for the tournament.
At the Musketeers Classic in Cincinnati, Ohio, senior Philipp Matlari, sophomore Kurtis Grant and freshman Christian Boyd also completed play Tuesday afternoon.
After two rounds of play on Monday, Matlari sat atop the leaderboard with a five-under, 69-68=137. Grant shot four-over in the second round to total 74-76=150 and sit tied for 40th, ahead of Boyd who was plus 14 and tied for 73rd with a score of 78-78=156.
On the final day of play on Tuesday, Matlari shot a six-over-par 77 to finish the tournament tied for sixth at one-over-par with scores of 69-68-77=214. Grant's scorecard totaled 74-76-73=223 to finish tied for 50th at 10-over. Boyd carded a nine-over, 80 in the final round of play and finished tied for 79th after shooting 78-78-80=236 for 23-over-par.
Next up, the Mountaineers are set to travel to Lahaina, Hawaii, to compete in the Ka'anapali Classic Collegiate Invitational from Nov 1-3. The first round tees off on Friday at the Royal Ka'anapali Golf Course.
