WVU Fifth at Ka’anapali Collegiate

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University golf team shot 11-under-par to sit in fifth place after the first day of play at the Ka'anapali Collegiate Classic on Friday at the Royal Ka'anapali Course in Lahaina, Hawaii.
The Mountaineers shot a team score of 273 to sit five strokes out of first place. Big 12 foes Oklahoma and Kansas lead the way at 16-under-par, while UCLA is in third at 15-under-par and Liberty is a stroke ahead of WVU at 12-under.
Freshman Nico Lang is the team lead, sitting in 12th place overall. He notched seven birdies and four bogeys to fire a 67, ending the round at four-under-par.
Junior Matthew Sharpstene was next for the Mountaineers, shooting a three-under-par 68 with six birdies and a trio of bogeys. He enters the second round of play tied for 23rd place.
Senior Etienne Papineau and juniors Logan Perkins and Mark Goetz posted matching scores of 69 to tie for 33rd place at two-under. Papineau registered five birdies but bogeyed three holes. Perkins had three birdies on the front nine and added a birdie and a pair of bogeys on the back nine. Goetz birdied five of nine holes on the front nine, bogeying No. 3, but added three more bogeys to go with another birdie on the back nine.
Playing as an individual, senior Philipp Matlari shot two-over-par to tie for 80th with a 73.
West Virginia is paired with Washington, Boise State and Clemson for the second round. Golfers will tee off in a shotgun start at 2:30 p.m. EST.
