Mountaineers Tied for Fifth at Ka’anapali

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Shooting 11-under-par for the second straight day, the West Virginia University golf team is tied for fifth place through 36 holes of play at the Ka'anapali Collegiate Classic on the Royal Ka'anapali Course in Lahaina, Hawaii, on Saturday.
The Mountaineers shot another 273, putting themselves at 273-273=546 for 22-under par, matching South Carolina for fifth place. Washington has taken the team lead at 27-under-par, followed by Oklahoma in second at 26-under. UCLA is 25-under and in third place, while Liberty is two strokes ahead of WVU at 24-under-par and in fourth place.
Freshman Nico Lang and junior Logan Perkins are tied for 15th to pace the squad. Lang had seven birdies to go with five bogeys, finishing two-under-par with a 69 in the round. His two-round score of 67-69=136 puts him at six-under-par. Perkins used a pair of eagles and a trio birdies to overcome a bogey and a double-bogey, finishing four-under-par on the day with a 67. He also finished the second round at six-under-par with score of 69-67=136.
Junior Mark Goetz birdied four straight holes on the front nine on his way to a three-under-par 68. He moved up 12 spots to sit tied for 20th place at five-under, showing 69-68=137 on his scorecard thus far.
After registering five birdies, senior Etienne Papineau capped the back nine with a bogey and a double-bogey to finish two-under-par. His score of 69-69=138 has him at four-under-par and in 27th place.
Junior Matthew Sharpstene finished with a two-over-par 73 on the day, putting his total at 68-73=141 for one-under. He is tied for 47th place.
Playing as an individual, senior Philipp Matlari is tied for 76th place with a 73-72=145 for three-over-par.
The Mountaineers are paired with South Carolina, Kansas and Boise State for the third and final round. Golfers will hit the links in a shotgun start at 1:30 p.m. ET.
