Mountaineers Fall in Austin

Box Score Matt Coleman III's 17 points, including a clutch 3 with 1:03 remaining, lifted Texas to a 61-54 victory over West Virginia tonight at the Erwin Center in Austin, Texas.

The Longhorns also got 14 points from Dylan Osetkowski and 10 from Elijah Mitrou-Long to improve to 10-4, 2-0.

West Virginia fought back from an eight-point deficit to make it a two-point game with 2:25 remaining when Derek Culver put back Esa Ahmad's 3-point miss.

19942Jaxson Hayes and Ahmad traded baskets to make the score 56-54, Longhorns, with 1:38 remaining. The Mountaineers defended Texas for almost the entire shot clock until Coleman, with three seconds remaining, hit a step-back 3 over Wesley Harris to give Texas a 59-54 lead.

"The guy made a great shot," West Virginia coach Bob Huggins said. "That was a big-time shot."

Osetkowski blocked Jordan McCabe's 3-point attempt at the other end, grabbed the rebound, and got the ball to Coleman who was fouled by Harris.

Coleman made both free throws.

Another trip down the floor for the Mountaineers resulted in a Beetle Bolden turnover, and the Longhorns dribbled off the remaining 24 seconds of the clock.

Nearly all of West Virginia's second-half scoring came from Bolden and freshman forward Derek Culver, who just missed another double-double with 17 points and nine rebounds. Culver made 8 of his 12 field goal attempts while grabbing five offensive rebounds.

Bolden finished with 13 while Ahmad ended with 10.

Texas finished the game shooting 50 percent from the floor, 21-of-42, and made 13-of-19 from the free throw line while West Virginia shot 40 percent from the floor, 20-of-50, and made 9-of-14 from the line.

"They're really talented," Huggins said. "We couldn't stay in front of them and at the end we just tried to keep them from penetrating. Our guards watched their guards run right by them and go down there and tip balls in while our bigs tried to fight with their bigs."

There were at least 12 different instances during tonight's game when the Mountaineers had possession of the ball with an opportunity to take the lead but could never get over the hump.

Huggins used a starting lineup tonight consisting of Harris, Ahmad and Routt inside with Jermaine Haley and freshman walk-one Taevon Horton in the backcourt. Horton played two minutes and Routt logged only four minutes of action.

WVU had a 29-28 edge on the glass and it committed just 12 turnovers after mishandling the basketball 22 times in Wednesday night's 62-59 loss to Texas Tech.

The defeat drops West Virginia to 8-6 overall and 0-2 in Big 12 play for the first time since joining the conference in 2012.

WVU has another tough one coming up on Wednesday night when the Mountaineers travel out to Manhattan, Kansas, to face Kansas State.
