MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - Will Grier and Gary Jennings Jr. hooked up twice for touchdowns and freshman Alec Sinkfield added a 9-yard TD run to give West Virginia a 21-7 halftime lead over Youngstown State.
Grier completed 13 of his 17 first-half pass attempts for 163 yards and a pair of touchdown tosses to Jennings of 11 and 24 yards.
West Virginia made a conscious effort to run the football tonight in wet conditions, a steady rain that began at kickoff increased in intensity as the game wore on.
WVU runners Martell Pettaway, Leddie Brown, Alec Sinkfield and Kennedy McKoy combined to rush 26 times for 146 yards, but Sinkfield was helped off the field in the second quarter after suffering a lower leg injury.
Youngstown State's lone touchdown came in the second quarter when the Penguins marched 75 yards in 10 plays, WVU's defense aiding things with a pair of pass interference penalties, that resulted in Montgomery VanGorder's 4-yard flip to backup tight end Miles Joiner, left wide open in the end zone when VanGorder scrambled away from pressure.
Youngstown State had success running the ball, the Penguins gaining 88 yards on 17 carries including a pair of 20-yard runs by Tevin McCaster and Christian Turner.
VanGorder completed three of his 10 pass attempts for 23 yards.
