WVU Up Three Spots in Both Polls
September 04, 2018 02:44 PM | Football
The new Associated Press and coaches polls were released earlier today and West Virginia jumped three spots in each following the Mountaineers' impressive season-opening victory against Tennessee at Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte, North Carolina.
WVU is now 14th in this week's AP Top 25 Poll and 17th in the coaches poll following its 40-14 win over the Volunteers last Saturday in which Heisman Trophy candidate Will Grier pass for 429 yards and five touchdowns – the most yards and touchdowns a Tennessee defense has permitted since Kentucky's Tim Couch (476 yards in 1997) and Kentucky's Andre Woodson (6 TDs in a four-overtime game in 2007).
Four different Mountaineer players caught touchdown passes as WVU rolled up 547 yards of total offense. The WVU defense also performed well, limiting Tennessee to only 301 total yards and 14 points.
West Virginia (1-0) will face Youngstown State (0-1) in its home opener this Saturday at Milan Puskar Stadium.
Youngstown State dropped its season opening game last week to Butler, 23-21, but the Penguins two years ago pushed West Virginia to the limit here in Morgantown before falling, 38-21, and last year, Youngstown State took Pitt to overtime before losing 28-21.
Saturday's game will have a special kickoff time of 6 p.m. and will be televised locally on AT&T SportsNet. Members of the 1988 Fiesta Bowl team will be returning to campus on Saturday to be recognized for the 30thanniversary of West Virginia's first undefeated, untied regular season in school history.
The Mountaineers lost to Notre Dame, 34-21, in the national championship game that year.
There are still tickets remaining for Saturday's game and those can be purchased by calling the Mountaineer Ticket Office toll-free at 1-800-WVU GAME or by logging on to WVUGAME.com.
