FORT WORTH – The West Virginia University women's soccer team carries a four-game win streak into a match at No. 21 TCU on Sunday, Sept. 23, with kick from Garvey-Rosenthal Soccer Stadium set for 2 p.m. EST.
The Mountaineers (5-2-1, 1-0) opened Big 12 Conference play with a 2-0 victory at No. 22 Texas Tech on Sept. 21. The win was WVU's first over a ranked opponent this season.
"Another nationally ranked program for this team. TCU has had an incredible start to 2018 and possesses an incredible attack," Mountaineer coach
Nikki Izzo-Brown said. "We've had to go out on the road this weekend and face two ranked opponents, and we know Sunday is going to be a huge challenge for us. I know that I will lean on my seniors to make sure we all understand how important this game is."
WVU is 7-1-2 all-time against the Horned Frogs (7-1-2, 0-0-1). Sunday is the fifth meeting in three seasons between the teams. Last year, the Mountaineers finished at 1-0-1 against TCU, earning a 2-0 win on Oct. 22, at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium, before settling for a 1-1 (2OT) draw in a semifinal exit at the Big 12 Soccer Championship on Nov. 3, at Swope Soccer Village in Kansas City, Missouri.
The Mountaineer defense has been the story as of late, posting three consecutive shutouts and holding opponents to a combined 14 shots in their last four matches. WVU's last three opponents – Boston University, Saint Francis (Pa.) and TTU – have failed to register a shot on-goal.
On Friday night, sophomore forward
Lauren Segalla broke scoreless play in the 47th minute with her first goal of the season and second career game-winning goal. Classmate
Stefany Ferrer-vanGinkel connected on her second penalty kick of the year in the 64th minute to push the score to 2-0.
Ferrer-vanGinkel, a midfielder, continues to pace the Mountaineer attack with nine points (4 G, 1 A). Forwards
Sh'Nia Gordon (2 G),
Alina Stahl (1 G, 2 A) and Segalla (1 G, 2 A) all rank No. 2 with four points.
Junior
Rylee Foster played all 90:00 minutes against TTU and turned away seven corner kicks. The clean sheet was her fourth of the season, the team's fifth, and she now ranks alone at No. 5 in WVU program history with 24 career shutouts. Foster sits at No. 3 in the conference with a 0.58 goals-against average (GAA).
