"The turn-around now to play again on Tuesday is going to be tough," WVU coach
Marlon LeBlanc said following Saturday night's win. "Cincinnati will go almost an entire week without having played a game before they play us. We're going to have to manage the next few days appropriately. We're going to have to watch their minutes, we're going to have to watch their recovery. We're really focused on that. We're not going to get the chance to get a lot done on the field in terms of some of these little things that I see we can do better just because we need to really focus on getting ourselves ready for Tuesday night, physically more so than anything else. Cincinnati is going to be a tough team. It's an old Big East rivalry. I'm sure they're going to be up for it, coming on the road. It will be my job to make sure our guys are up for it too."
The Mountaineers (3-3) began a stretch of five home games in six matches with a 3-1 win over Saint Francis (Pa.) on Saturday night. WVU has won four consecutive non-conference home matches and is unbeaten in 13 of its last 16 against non-conference opponents at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium. Saturday night's win also improved West Virginia's record to 3-0 when scoring two or more goals in a match in 2018.
WVU and UC, Big East foes from 2005-11, met three times in league competition, with West Virginia winning all three matches, in 2006, '09 and '11. The Bearcats (1-5) are coming off a 3-1 loss to Western Michigan on Wednesday. Including last week's contest vs. WMU, UC will play three of WVU's five Mid-American Conference opponents in the regular season.
Senior midfielder
Joey Piatczyc ranks No. 13 in the country with four assists and is 17th nationally with two game-winning goals, both MAC-best totals. Piatczyc's eight points is second in the MAC, while senior forward
Rushawn Larmond and junior midfielder
Ethan Shim share the team lead with three goals.
In goal, sophomore
Steven Tekesky leads the MAC with a .839 save percentage, 26 total saves and 4.33 saves per game. He is second in the league with a 0.844 goals-against average.
SCOUTING CINCINNATI
Cincinnati owns a 1-5 record, with an 0-4 mark at home and a 1-1 record on the road. UC has lost three in a row, most recently a 3-1 decision to Western Michigan. The Bearcats began the year with back-to-back shutout losses before a 2-0 victory at Cleveland State on Aug. 31.
Six players have all scored one goal for the Bearcats this season, while Ryan Melink and Donovan Segree each have two assists to share the team lead with two points. Melink has a team-best 11 shots, and Darryn Commissiong has seven shots on goal. Pearce Skinner has played four games in goal for UC. He has made 13 saves and allowed nine goals, for a .591 save percentage and a 2.25 goals-against average.
Hylton Dayes is in his 18th season at Cincinnati. He is the program's all-time winningest coach, with a 133-150-43 record, and led the Bearcats to NCAA Tournament appearances in 2003 and '06. A four-time All-American as a player at Wright State, Dayes owns a 230-235-62 career record in 28 seasons as a head coach.
SERIES HISTORY VS. THE BEARCATS
The Mountaineers are a perfect 5-0 all-time against Cincinnati, with three meetings coming as Big East foes. After a pair of nonconference wins, 2-0 at home in 1986 and 2-1 on the road in 1987, WVU and UC played in 2006, 2009 and 2011 as conference opponents. West Virginia won the opener in 2006, 2-0 at home, and followed it up with a 2-0 victory in Cincinnati in 2009. In 2011, also on the road, the Mountaineers earned a 1-0 win.
UP NEXT: SATURDAY AT DAYTON
The Mountaineers are back on the road to face Dayton on Saturday, Sept. 22, at 7 p.m. ET. WVU then returns home to begin a three-match homestand vs. Radford on Tuesday, Sept. 25, at 7 p.m., at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium. Tickets are available at
WVUGAME.com or by calling 1-800 WVU GAME.
LAST TIME OUT: HOME WIN
West Virginia won its fourth consecutive non-conference home match with a 3-1 victory over Saint Francis (Pa.) on Sept. 15.
The Mountaineers took a 1-0 lead in the 37th minute and added a goal on a penalty kick in the 63rd minute to extend their lead to 2-0. Eight minutes later, in the 71st minute, West Virginia made it 3-0 before the Red Flash scored their lone goal in the 86th minute.
Larmond scored WVU's first and third goals, recording his first multi-goal game of his career, while Piatczyc converted on the penalty kick for his second game-winning goal of the year.
With the two points on the game-winning goal, Piatczyc has 15 game-winning points in his career, tied for eighth-most in program history.
Junior defender
Ryan Kellogg and Tekesky earned assists on Larmond's first goal. Tekesky's assist was the first of his career.
In goal, Tekesky made one save, as the WVU defense held SFU to just three shots, two on goal. The Mountaineers had 10 shots, five on goal.
