The Mountaineers (1-1-3) are 0-1-1 against ranked opponents this season, most recently settling for a 0-0 (2OT) draw against No. 19. Northwestern on Aug. 26 in West Lafayette, Indiana. The Hoyas are 0-0-1, playing to a 0-0 (2OT) draw against No. 11 Duke on Aug. 23.
"We have the 11th-best team coming in to Morgantown Sunday," Mountaineer coach
Nikki Izzo-Brown said. "We're looking forward to a big-time battle; it's always a battle with Georgetown. We both want a win. It's going to be a great day to bring your dog out, too."
The Hoyas (3-0-2) are the reigning Big East Conference champion. Since the start of the 2018 season, WVU has faced the Big Ten Conference champion and runner-up, as well as the Southeastern Conference runner-up.
WVU is 15-4-2 all-time against Georgetown. Last year's meeting in the 2017 season opener was a contest between top-five squads, with the No. 1 Mountaineers earning a 1-0 victory over the No. 5 Hoyas on Aug. 18, at Shaw Field, in Washington, D.C.
The Mountaineers more than doubled their season-goal total in a 3-0 victory over Xavier in their home season opener at Dick Dlesk Stadium on Aug. 30, with a trio of players tallying their first career goal, including freshman midfielder
Addison Clark, who scored the game-winner in the 42nd minute. Freshman
Issy Sibley and sophomore
Lois Joel added second-half insurance goals.
The WVU defense blanked the Musketeers, denying Xavier a shot on-goal for their second straight shutout, credited to junior
Rylee Foster. The Mountaineers earned a 29-2 shot advantage and forced Xavier into 10 saves. WVU also finished with a 9-1 edge in corner kicks.
Senior midfielder
Grace Cutler paces WVU with a 0.6 points/game average. Classmate
Nadya Gill shows a 3.8 shots/game average. Foster, who needs one more shutout to tie Hannah Steadman (2014-15) at No. 5 on the all-time WVU career shutout list, owns a 0.53 goals-against average (GAA).
GU earned its third win of the season with a 1-0 decision at George Washington on Aug. 30. Senior Amanda Carolan, a 2018 Preseason All-BIG EAST Team selection, tallied the game-winner, her first goal of the season, in the 72nd minute. GU finished with an 8-2 shot advantage. Senior Arielle Schechtman made five saves for her third clean sheet of the season.
