
WVU Sits No. 9 in United Soccer Coaches Poll

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University women's soccer team is ranked No. 9 in the 2018 United Soccer Coaches Division I Women's Preseason Ranking, as released on Tuesday.

The Mountaineers' position marks the third consecutive season in which the team was placed in the preseason top 10. It's also one spot better than WVU's 2017 season-ending ranking of No. 10.
The five-time Big 12 champion Mountaineers are the highest-ranked team in the conference. Baylor ranks No. 15, while Texas sits at No. 17.
Defending National Champion Stanford claimed the No. 1 spot, while UCLA, the reigning National Runner-Up, ranks No. 2. Duke, Penn State and South Carolina round out the top five.
North Carolina, Florida and Virginia also rank ahead of West Virginia, while Florida State completes the top 10.
In all, four of the Mountaineers' 2018 opponents are ranked in the poll: No. 4 Penn State, No. 15 Baylor, No. 17 Texas and No. 22 Georgetown.
The Mountaineers were ranked within the top 10 of the United Soccer Coaches poll throughout the 2017 season after opening the season at No. 1 a year ago, a position they held for two weeks.
West Virginia has not ranked outside of the top 10 of the coaches' poll since the third week of the 2015 season.
A total of 16 letterwinners, including six starters, return for WVU this season. The squad is coming off a 16-win campaign in 2017 and an appearance in the NCAA Tournament Third Round. WVU has advanced to the tournament's "Sweet 16" for three consecutive seasons and six times in program history.
WVU opens the 2018 season at No. 4 Penn State on Friday, Aug. 17, with first kick at Jeffrey Field set for 7:30 p.m. ET.
