MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – While West Virginia University and Mountaineer student-athletes have turned the page from the 2017-18 academic and athletic year, one last, big piece of business needed to be completed – awarding letter jackets.
Earned by WVU's first-year letter winners, the Letterman's Jacket Ceremony was held Monday, Aug. 27, at the football team room inside the Milan Puskar Center.
"Earning your first varsity letter is a special moment for student-athletes, and I congratulate our honorees for a job well done," WVU Director of Athletics Shane Lyons, who handed out more than 60 jackets, said. "This is a tradition that started last year, and even though it is only in its second year, I love it. I wanted the moment to be something more than our student-athletes just going to the equipment room to pick up their jackets. It takes a lot of hard work and dedication to earn that first letter, and I'm very proud of our student-athletes for their great accomplishment. They should wear their jacket proudly because they earned it."
Following the ceremony, all Mountaineer student-athletes gathered in the Caperton Indoor Practice Facility for the 2018 SAAC Attack. Sponsored by the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, the night featured a catered dinner, yard games, karaoke, a rock climbing wall and a t-shirt distribution.
"SAAC Attack is one of the three events we have each year where all 17 teams are included," Tangela Cheatham, WVU's director of NCAA Life Skills Programming, said. "This is the night the athletic department administration and staff officially welcome back the student-athletes. It's our kickoff for a strong year, academically and athletically.
"We saw the student-athletes mingle and interact with each other. It was great to help them bridge the gaps between their teams outside of the academic center."
