MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - West Virginia begins the season ranked No. 17 in the Associated Press Top 25 college football poll, released today.
It is the fourth time under coach Dana Holgorsen that West Virginia is starting the season ranked in the writers' poll, the other instances coming 2011, 2012 and 2017.
It is also the 18th time AP has ranked West Virginia to begin the year dating back to the Mountaineers' first-ever preseason appearance in 1953.
West Virginia is one of four Big 12 teams ranked in this year's preseason AP poll. The others are Oklahoma (seventh), TCU (16th) and Texas (23rd).
The Mountaineers are also 20th in the preseason Amway Coaches Poll revealed earlier this month.
Season-opening foe Tennessee is not nationally ranked.
West Virginia continues work in preparation for its opener against the Volunteers to be played at Bank America Stadium in Charlotte, North Carolina, on Saturday, Sept. 1. Kickoff is set for 3:30 p.m. and the matchup will be televised nationally on CBS.
Tickets for the 2018 campaign remain on sale through the Mountaineer Ticket Office and can be purchased by calling 1-800-WVU GAME or by logging on to WVUGAME.com.
