MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – For the second consecutive year, West Virginia is going to start the 2018 football season with its highlights showing on ESPN SportsCenter.
That's because the Mountaineers are ranked 20th in the initial Amway Coaches Poll released earlier today.
It's just the third time under coach Dana Holgorsen that West Virginia will begin the season ranked by the coaches, the other occasions coming in 2012 when WVU began the year 11thand last year when WVU was also 20th to start the season.
It's the 11th time in school history West Virginia is starting its football season ranked in the coaches poll, all coming since 1988.
The other instances were in 2017 (20th), 2012 (11th), 2010 (24th), 2007 (sixth), 2006 (seventh), 2004 (11th), 1998 (10th), 1994 (23rd), 1989 (13th) and 1988 (15th).
West Virginia has had far more success with the writers, the Mountaineers beginning their season nationally ranked 17 times since 1953, including three times under Holgorsen.
The AP poll for 2018 has not yet been released.
West Virginia is one of five Big 12 teams ranked in the preseason coaches' poll. The others are Oklahoma (fifth), TCU (16th), Texas (21st) and Oklahoma State (25th).
West Virginia opens the 2018 campaign in Charlotte, North Carolina, on Saturday, Sept. 1, when the Mountaineers take on Tennessee at Bank America Stadium.
Tickets for the 2018 campaign are on sale through the Mountaineer Ticket Office and can be purchased by calling 1-800-WVU GAME or by logging on to WVUGAME.com.
