MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The No. 9-ranked West Virginia University women's soccer team took down Wake Forest, 3-2, in an exhibition matchup at Spry Stadium in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, on Saturday.
The Mountaineers scored a pair of second-half goals to help claim the victory. Senior forward Sh'Nia Gordon netted the game-winner, scoring in the 74th minute to give WVU the lead for good.
Senior midfielder Nadya Gill found Gordon, who dribbled into the box and beat the Wake Forest goalkeeper to the left side.
"It was a great test for the girls to get a game in against an opponent like Wake Forest," WVU coach Nikki Izzo-Brown said. "Having been in preseason for 10 days, it was exactly what we needed to prepare for our upcoming games. We get to take what we did today and continue to build on it."
After Wake Forest took an early 1-0 lead just six minutes into the contest, the Mountaineers registered a goal of their own in 18th minute. Sophomore forward Lauren Segalla scored from just outside the box on an assist from freshman forward Jordan Brewster.
WVU grabbed its first lead just two minutes into the second half when Segalla added her second goal of the game, off a header from freshman forward Issy Sibley.
Following a 30-minute weather delay, the Demon Deacons leveled the match at 2-2 in the 59th minute. From there, Gordon answered, sending the Mountaineers home with the preseason victory.
WVU held advantages in corner kicks and shots in the win. Junior Rylee Foster and sophomore Kayla Thompson split time in goal.
Next up, the Mountaineers open the 2018 regular season at No. 4 Penn State on Friday, Aug. 17, with first kick at Jeffrey Field set for 7:30 p.m. ET.
