MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Athlete CRUSH College Impact Awards has named West Virginia University junior linebacker
David Long Jr. for its annual random act of kindness award, the organization announced.
The College Impact Awards recognize student-athletes from across the nation who have displayed acts of selflessness worth sharing. Sharing these stories, accomplishments and positive acts is key to prompting action from others. The organization wants to start a movement where athletes use their platform and their positions to do good.
Long Jr. was nominated for his selfless act and the inspiration to others generated from his kindness. At the Heart of Dallas Bowl last December, Long Jr. rented a bike from the local bike-share system and carried containers of food back and forth from the team hotel to local homeless people in Dallas, in the cold weather on Christmas day.
Long Jr. nominated the Morgantown Ronald McDonald House as the recipient of the award money ($531) that was being donated by Athlete CRUSH.
After earning a starting spot as a redshirt freshman, Long Jr. returned to play in nine games in 2017 after suffering a preseason knee injury. The ESPN.com All-Big 12 Conference selection finished third on the team with 76 tackles, including 56 unassisted tackles, four sacks, a team-leading 16.5 tackles for loss, six pass breakups and a fumble recovery.
