MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – After another hot week at the plate, West Virginia University freshman third baseman Tyler Doanes has been named the Big 12 Newcomer of the Week.
The honor is the first weekly award of Doanes' career. Along with being named the Big 12 Newcomer of the Week, Doanes also was recognized as the WVU Student-Athlete of the Week.
Doanes is the fourth Mountaineer to be recognized by the Big 12 Conference and the second in as many weeks. Kyle Gray was named the Big 12 Player of the Week last week, while Kevin Brophy was honored on Feb. 26, and Marques Inman on April 9.
A Fayetteville, Georgia, native, Doanes led the team with a .600 batting average in WVU's three-game series at TCU last weekend. He hit his first career home run, an inside-the-parker, and had two hits in every game, along with three RBIs in Sunday's series finale. Doanes had a team-leading 1.000 slugging percentage at TCU.
Doanes led the Big 12 among freshmen with a .500 batting average last week and ranked No. 7 overall with a .563 on-base percentage, both team-leading totals. He added a .786 slugging percentage in four games.
In his first season as a Mountaineer, Doanes is hitting .367, second-best on the team. He has a .570 slugging percentage and a .444 on-base percentage with a team-best four triples. He has 16 RBIs, five doubles and a homer to go allowing with five stolen bases in six attempts.
