MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University women's soccer team earned a come-from-behind, 3-1 win at Virginia this afternoon in Charlottesville, Virginia.
A scoreless first half was followed by a flurry of goals in the second. The Cavaliers struck first, netting a goal on sophomore Rylee Foster in the 51st minute. Junior defender Bianca St. Georges answered 23 minutes later, and freshman forward Stefany Ferrer-vanGinkel netted the game-winner with less than four minutes remaining. Freshman midfielder Lois Joel iced the game with a goal in the 89th minute.
"This weekend was an awesome opportunity for this team to see different styles of play from two very different teams," Mountaineer coach Nikki Izzo-Brown said. "Pitt presented us with problems Friday night, and we came into today's match with the intent to solve those problems.
"UVA high-pressured us, and we learned today how to respond to that. We saw different players contribute, and we showed we have a lot of versatility in our scoring. I'm happy to see we can score four goals in one weekend."
UVA controlled momentum in the first half, forcing Foster into four saves. The Mountaineer defense bounced back in the second half and held the Cavaliers to just one shot on-goal.
"I thought Virginia did a good job possessing in the first half – they put us under a lot of pressure," Izzo-Brown added. "We responded in the second half and made some adjustments that worked well. I was happy to see the team turn it on, especially after Friday's match."
Of note, Foster played the first 70 minutes in net before freshman Ashley Triplett came in to finish the contest.
WVU finished with four shots on-goal, all in the second half.
UVA finished with a 4-2 edge in corner kicks.
The Mountaineers return to Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium on Saturday, April 21, for a match against Tennessee at noon.
