MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The fourth and final NCAA Division I Wrestling Coaches' Panel Rankings and the third edition of the NCAA Division I Wrestling Ratings Percentage Index (RPI) were released by the NCAA on Thursday evening.
Redshirt junior Zeke Moisey (125), Redshirt senior Jacob A. Smith (197) and redshirt freshman Matthew Schmitt (133) of the West Virginia University wrestling team appear in the top 33 of the NCAA Coaches' Panel Rankings as well as the RPI.
Wrestlers must have 17 matches against Division I opponents to be eligible for the RPI rankings. Forfeits do not count towards that total.
Moisey, the 2018 Big 12 runner-up at 125 pounds, appears at No. 13 in both the coaches' panel rankings and RPI poll. The Northampton, Pennsylvania, native has a team-leading 22 wins, registering five pins, three tech. falls and two major decisions on the year. He also has topped five opponents ranked inside Intermat's Top-20 Poll this season, most notably upsetting No. 8 Taylor LaMont of Utah Valley in the semifinals of the 2018 Big 12 Wrestling Championship.
Smith, the 2018 Big 12 runner-up at 197 pounds, moves up two spots in the final NCAA coaches' panel rankings, checking in at No. 20. The Charleston, West Virginia, native also checks-in to the RPI poll for the first time this season, appearing at No. 21. He has notched 13 wins on the year, upsetting his first ranked opponent of the season on March 3 to advance to the Big 12 Championship match at 197 pounds for the second straight year.
Schmitt, who is coming off a fourth-place finish in the 133-pound bracket at this year's conference championship, comes in at No. 24 in both the coaches' panel rankings and RPI poll. The Platte City, Missouri, native ranks second on the team with 21 wins, collecting five major decisions and three pins on the year. He earned his first victory over a ranked opponent on Jan. 21, defeating No. 20 Ian Parker of Iowa State in a 4-2 decision in sudden victory.
