Series Evened with Loss at No. 7 Texas Tech

Box Score LUBBOCK, Texas – The West Virginia University baseball team lost at No. 7 Texas Tech, 4-1, on Friday night in Lubbock, Texas, at Dan Law Field at Rip Griffin Park.

The Mountaineers (10-13, 1-4 Big 12) were no-hit into the sixth inning before scoring one run on three hits. WVU held the Red Raiders (22-6, 2-3 Big 12), the Big 12's best offense and No. 1 RPI team in the country, to four runs on six hits.

The loss evens the series at 1-1 between WVU and TTU and snaps a three-game winning streak by the Mountaineers against Texas Tech. West Virginia has won five of the last eight in the series, all while TTU has been ranked in the top 10 nationally. Tonight's game is just the second in the last eight games that has not been decided by one run.

After getting shut out last night for the first time at home since 2015, the Red Raiders improved to 15-1 at home tonight in front of 3,989 fans. West Virginia falls to 1-1 against ranked opponents this season.

Sophomore right-handed starter Alek Manoah allowed four runs on six hits in 4.0 innings. He struck out three and walked three while suffering the loss.

Offensively, sophomore first baseman Marques Inman had two of WVU's three hits and drove in the Mountaineers' lone run in the sixth inning. Junior right fielder Darius Hill also had a hit in the defeat.

West Virginia had a runner reach in each of the first three innings, but a double play ended the first and WVU stranded one in the second and two in the third. Meanwhile, Manoah pitched a 1-2-3 first and got out of the second with the help of an inning-ending double play.

Texas Tech took its first lead of the series in the third inning on a solo home with one out. TTU extended its lead to 3-0 in the fourth on a two-run home run with no outs.

In the fifth, the first two batters reached, and senior righty BJ Myers relieved Manoah. He gave up a sacrifice fly, but limited the damage to a run and stranded one baserunner.

The Mountaineers cut into the deficit with a run in the sixth to make it 4-1. The rally began with two outs, when Hill doubled down the left-field line for WVU's first hit of the game. He advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored on Inman's single up the middle.

Myers followed with a perfect bottom of the sixth. Junior right-hander Christian Young took the mound in the seventh and gave up a walk, but nothing else. Young then pitched a perfect eighth to send the game to the ninth inning with the Mountaineers trailing 4-1.

Inman led off the ninth with a double to the wall in center field for his second hit of the game. However, he was stranded at third to end the game.

The series in Lubbock, Texas, concludes on Saturday at 3 p.m. ET/2 p.m. CT. The game will air on FSSW+ and via FOX Sports GO to subscribers.
