Mountaineers Open Spring vs. Charleston
March 28, 2018 03:24 PM | Men's Soccer
MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University men's soccer team opens the spring season against Charleston on Thursday, March 29, at 7 p.m. ET.
The exhibition match will be played at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium and admission is free for all fans.
"The guys have been doing great," coach Marlon LeBlanc said of his team's progress through spring practice. "We have a pretty sizable group of returning players, even though we had a big senior class. I've been very pleased with what we've been able to do so far, it's been productive. There's been a lot of growth. We had a young group that did very well last season, and I'm pleased with the progression that we've made so far.
Charleston won the Division II national title last season, the first NCAA title in school history. The Golden Eagles went 21-1-2 in 2017 and 11-0-1 in the Mountain East Conference. UC is coached by former Mountaineer Dan Stratford.
The Mountaineers went 9-6-4 in 2017 and earned a Mid-American Conference Championship berth for the fifth time in six years. Seventeen lettermen return for WVU, including nine that played in at least 15 matches.
Among the returners are Ryan Kellogg, a CoSIDA Academic All-District First Team honoree in 2017, Pascal Derwaritsch, who was named to the MAC All-Tournament Team a year ago and Sebastian Garcia-Herreros, a MAC Distinguished Scholar-Athlete last season. Joey Piatczyc, a two-time All-MAC Team honoree, also is back on the pitch for the Mountaineers after missing the 2017 season with an injury.
WVU's spring schedule continues on Saturday, April 7, at 4 p.m. against West Virginia Wesleyan. The Mountaineers then travel to in-state foe Marshall on Saturday, April 14, at 5 p.m. WVU will return home to play VCU on Saturday, April 21, at 3 p.m., before the spring concludes with the annual Alumni Match on Friday, April 27, at 7 p.m.
