Box Score NORMAN, Okla. – The West Virginia University baseball team lost the opening game of the doubleheader at Oklahoma, 10-2, on Saturday afternoon in Norman, Oklahoma.
 
The Mountaineers (9-11, 0-2 Big 12) got on the board first for the 12th time this season, with two runs in the fourth inning. However, the Sooners (16-9, 2-0 Big 12) answered with seven runs, five unearned, in the bottom of the fourth, and added another three in the fifth.
 
WVU scored its two runs on four hits, while OU's 10 runs came on 12 hits.
 
Junior third baseman Ivan Gonzalez led WVU with two hits and a run scored for his sixth multi-hit game of the season. Junior right fielder Darius Hill had a hit, an RBI and a run scored in the contest.
 
Sophomore right-handed starter Alek Manoah suffered the loss. In 3.2 innings, he allowed seven runs, two earned, on six hits. He struck out four and walked four.
 
The Mountaineers had hits in two of the first three innings before scoring two runs in the fourth. The inning began with a leadoff single from Gonzalez and Hill followed with a double to right to score Gonzalez. A groundout by sophomore first baseman Kevin Brophy brought home Hill from third to give WVU a 2-0 lead.
 
Oklahoma answered with seven runs in the bottom half of the inning, five of them unearned. A throwing error by Manoah scored the first two, and back-to-back sacrifice flies gave OU a 4-2 lead. With the bases loaded and two outs, sophomore righty Cody Wood relieved Manoah. He inherited a 2-0 count and walked the first batter before giving up a ground-rule double to score two more. All three runs Wood gave up were unearned in the inning.
 
In the fifth, the Sooners added three runs on four hits with one error to extend their lead to 10-2. All three runs scored with two outs, on a pair of singles and an RBI double.
 
Wood followed with a 1-2-3 sixth inning and worked around a leadoff single in the seventh. For the Mountaineer offense, they were retired in order in the sixth, seventh and eighth innings.
 
Junior right-hander Christian Young took the mound in the eighth and retired the Sooners in order.
 
In the ninth, junior pinch-hitter Andrew Zitel walked, but he could not score.
 
Due to inclement weather expected in the area on Sunday, WVU and OU will conclude the three-game series tonight, with the second game of today's doubleheader.
