On a windy evening at L. Dale Mitchell Park, the Mountaineers (9-10, 0-1 Big 12) scored six runs on nine hits. The Sooners (15-9, 1-0 Big 12) scored their 19 runs on 22 hits. OU committed one error.
Nine different Mountaineers recorded one hit, and sophomore designated hitter Marques Inman had two RBIs as part of a four-run sixth inning for the Mountaineers. Along with the four runs in the sixth, WVU added two in the eighth.
Senior right-handed starter BJ Myers suffered his first loss of the season. Making his sixth start, he allowed seven runs on nine hits in 3.0 innings. He struck out three and walked two.
Oklahoma scored three runs in the first to take a 3-0 lead, as the first five batters reached in the inning. A sacrifice fly scored the final run and Myers proceeded to retire six in a row, thanks a 1-2-3 second inning.
The Sooners extended their lead to 7-0 with four runs in the third, on four hits. A two-RBI triple was followed by back-to-back doubles, both with one out.
Sophomore right-hander Riley Troutt relieved Myers on the mound to start the fourth. He gave up one run on a sacrifice fly, as OU took an 8-0 lead. The lead became 12-0 in the fifth, as Oklahoma scored four runs on five hits.
The Mountaineers got on the board in the sixth, with four runs on four hits to cut the deficit to 12-4. Back-to-back one-out singles got the inning going, before WVU's first run scored on an error as junior third baseman Ivan Gonzalez reached on a fielder's choice. With two outs and two on, Inman doubled home two runs. Sophomore first baseman Kevin Brophy then followed with an RBI single.
However, OU answered in the bottom of the inning thanks to a three-run home run. The Sooners added a run in the seventh to make it 16-4.
West Virginia scored two in the eighth, all with two outs. A two-out double by junior right fielder Darius Hill was followed by an RBI, pinch-hit double off the bat of freshman Nick Denicola. It was Denicola's first career hit and RBI. Freshman catcher Connor Hamilton plated another run with an RBI single.
Oklahoma responded in the bottom of the eighth with three runs to make it 19-6.
