MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Juniors Sebastian Garcia-Herreros and Ryan Kellogg of the West Virginia University men's soccer team have been named Distinguished Scholar Athletes by the Mid-American Conference, the league announced on Saturday.
Garcia-Herreros and Kellogg are both recognized for the second consecutive year, and both were named to the Academic All-MAC Team earlier this month. The two honorees in 2018 mark the third year in a row the Mountaineers have had at least two student-athletes recognized by the conference.
Garcia-Herreros and Kellogg helped guide the Mountaineers to a 14-7-0 season, a MAC regular-season title and an NCAA Tournament berth this season. West Virginia concluded the year ranked in the top 25 in each of the major poll's final rankings, coming in as high as No. 17 by Soccer America.
A Southwest Ranches, Florida, native, Garcia-Herreros was named to the MAC All-Tournament Team and started all 21 matches. He led team with 1,895 minutes played, was second with seven assists and had four shots, one on goal. Garcia-Herreros is majoring in civil engineering and has a 3.60 grade-point average.
From Parkville, Missouri, Kellogg was named to the All-MAC Second Team and the United Soccer Coaches Scholar All-Region Second Team. He played in 20 matches with 16 starts, was third on the team with two game-winning goals, fourth with four goals and 10 points and had two assists, 19 shots and eight shots on goal in 1,559 minutes. Kellogg is majoring in finance and has a 3.80 GPA.
The Distinguished Scholar Athlete is given by the MAC to students who have excelled in athletics and academics in each sport it sponsors. From the Academic All-MAC Teams, the faculty athletic representatives selected the 'best of the best' of the Academic All-MAC Teams to be honored with a 3.50 GPA or higher with the Distinguished Scholar Athlete Award for the 2018-19 season. The number of Distinguished Scholar Athletes from each sport were equivalent to the number of first-team selections or 20% of nominees, whichever was greater.
