MANHATTAN, Kan. – Following a season-opening win over Big 12 foe Northern Colorado, the West Virginia University wrestling team heads to Roanoke, Virginia, to compete in the 2018 Hokie Open, at Berglund Arena, on Sunday, Nov. 4, with the first round of competition starting at 9 a.m. ET.
Formerly known as the Southeast Open, the one-day event will welcome 500 wrestlers to the mat. The Hokie Open includes two divisions, the freshman/sophomore division and the open division. Live results can be found at FloArena.com, as 17 Mountaineers will compete in a Gold and Blue singlet on Sunday.
"We have such a long season," first-year coach Tim Flynn said. "You just analyze your wrestling and move on. We didn't put any fear in team Russia with our win on Thursday. We want to be able to move on and build off what we did in our season opener."
Redshirt sophomore Matthew Schmitt, a 2018 NCAA Qualifier, is the only Mountaineer to return to the lineup nationally ranked. Schmitt sits at No. 18 by the Open Mat, No. 19 by FloWrestling and No. 20 by Intermat.
The Mountaineers are coming off a 22-14 season-opening win against the Bears on Thursday, held at the WVU Coliseum, in Morgantown. WVU won six of 10 bouts against UNC, including a win by fall at 285 pounds.
Down 14-9 with four bouts remaining, Schmitt collected a huge 13-5 major decision over Christopher Sandoval at 133 pounds, cutting WVU's deficit to one at 14-13. Redshirt senior Joe Wheeling then pushed the Mountaineers in front with a 7-1 decision over Owen Lamb at 141 pounds. Classmate Christian Monserrat helped WVU seal the deal with an 8-2 decision over Mason Hulse at 149 pounds, increasing the Mountaineers lead to five at 19-14. Redshirt junior Zachary Moore capped the night for the Mountaineers, as he used a trio of takedowns, a reversal and four near fall points for a 12-8 decision over Jordan Robison at 157 pounds.
Looking ahead, the Mountaineers will head to their final open tournament of the season, traveling to Troy, New York, for the 2018 Journeymen Collegiate Classic on Sunday, Nov. 11. It will mark the first time since 2016 that WVU will compete at the event.
