MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Sixth-ranked Oklahoma leads 12th-ranked West Virginia, 35-28, in the shootout everyone had anticipated.
The Mountaineers scored four out of seven times they had the football but was stopped once on downs once deep in Sooner territory, punted once and lost a fumble late in the second quarter that Oklahoma returned for a touchdown.
Not that Oklahoma's offense needed any help.
Sooner quarterback Kyler Murray marched Oklahoma up and down the field, the Sooners averaging an astonishing 14.1 yards per snap.
OU's four offensive scoring drives covered 81yards in seven plays, 72 yards in seven plays, 66 yards in two plays and 75 yards in two plays.
West Virginia's defense, which hadn't allowed a play longer than 50 yards from scrimmage all season long, saw Oklahoma rip off three of them in the game's first 30 minutes.
Murray completed an efficient 9-of-12 for 168 yards and a 25-yard touchdown to Marquise Brown and he also ran three times for 78 yards, one of those going for a 55-yard touchdown on Oklahoma's opening possession of the game.
West Virginia's only defensive stop came late in the first quarter when Murray's fumble was recovered by the Mountaineers' Kenny Robinson at the West Virginia 22.
Oklahoma's big defensive play came late in the second quarter when the Mountaineers were trying to answer Oklahoma's fourth touchdown. Caleb Kelly came untouched and sacked quarterback Will Grier for a 12-yard loss. Grier fumbled the football and Kelly scooped it up at the 10 and walked into the end zone, giving the Sooners a 35-21 lead.
West Virginia answered with its fourth touchdown of the half, a Kennedy McKoy 1-yard run with 18 seconds remaining.
OU opted to take a knee with 13 seconds left and run out the clock.
Grier completed 20-of-29 passes for 262 yards and two touchdowns, both going to David Sills V, while Martell Pettaway and McKoy scored the other touchdowns.
West Virginia had the football for 11 more minutes than Oklahoma and amassed 371 total yards.
Oklahoma is set to get the football to begin the second half.
