Mountaineers Lead Cowboys at Halftime
November 17, 2018 05:32 PM | Football
Will Grier fired two touchdown passes and Kennedy McKoy has already established a season high with 119 yards rushing to lead seventh-ranked West Virginia to a 31-14 halftime lead over Oklahoma State at Boone Pickens Stadium in Stillwater, Oklahoma.
Grier completed 16-of-26 passes for 159 yards and touchdown passes to Gary Jennings Jr. and David Sills V, but it was the running of McKoy that really opened things up for the offense.
McKoy got most of the rushing yardage on West Virginia's opening touchdown drive of the game, and he got all of it on the Mountaineers' fourth touchdown to put them ahead 28-14.
The WVU defense, which generated three turnovers in the first half, came up with another one late in the second quarter when Oklahoma State was attempting to get points right before the half.
With the ball at the ODSU 49 and the clock winding inside of a minute in the half, cornerback Keith Washington came up with the secondary's second pick at the WVU 35.
Two Grier completions moved the ball into OSU territory where Evan Staley was able to boot a 43-yard field goal to conclude the half.
West Virginia's 17-point lead could have been more as the offense was unable to get a first down on a fourth-and-one quarterback sneak by Grier at the OSU 4.
Oklahoma State quarterback Taylor Cornelius was responsible for both touchdowns on passes to Tylan Wallace and Logan Carter.
Oklahoma State will get the football to begin the second half.
