MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The No. 8-ranked and second-seeded West Virginia University women's soccer team continues play in the 2018 NCAA Tournament with a second-round match against Wake Forest on Friday, Nov. 16, at 6 p.m., at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium.
Tickets are on sale now at WVUGAME.com. Tickets are $8 for adults, $5 for students and youth 12 and under and $3 for groups of 10 or more. WVU students will be admitted for free with a valid WVU Student I.D.
The Mountaineers' match is the second of two set for Dick Dlesk Stadium Friday. No. 18-ranked and third-seeded South Carolina kicks against No. 14 Penn State at 3 p.m. The winners of Friday's matches will meet in the NCAA Tournament Third Round on Sunday, Nov. 18, at 3 p.m., at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium.
"I've leaned on our fans all year long, and I think part of being at home is playing in front of our fans and making our venue one of the toughest venues to play in," Mountaineer coach Nikki Izzo-Brown said. "I want to make sure that everyone hears that we really need them to get into the stands and be loud and proud. We want Dlesk Stadium to be the hardest stadium to play against. We want to make sure Wake knows how great our fans are."
WVU (15-4-3, 7-2) rides a four-match win streak into its fourth consecutive appearance in the NCAA Tournament Second Round. The Mountaineers are 21-17-4 all-time in tournament play and 5-6-1 in the second round.
Friday is only the third-ever meeting between the Mountaineers and Demon Deacons (9-8-1, 4-6 ACC) and the first in Morgantown in 11 years. WVU is 0-2 all-time against Wake Forest. In their last meeting, the Demon Deacons knocked WVU out of the 2009 NCAA Tournament with a 3-0, second-round win on Nov. 15, at Spry Stadium, in Winston-Salem, North Carolina.
"Wake Forest has incredible ball movement with an All-ACC midfield," Izzo-Brown added. "We know just how dynamic they are in the attack. It's really going to take a huge mindset for us to beat this team because they are so dangerous."
WVU advanced to the second round via a 6-0 win over Radford on Nov. 10, in Morgantown. The Mountaineers' six goals were a program tournament record and the most for a WVU team since earning a 6-0 win over Kansas in 2015. WVU held Radford to two shots, none on-goal, and denied the Highlanders a corner kick.
The Mountaineers boast one of the nation's stingiest defenses, as WVU ranks No. 6 nationally with a 0.482 goals-against average (GAA). Each of the Mountaineers' last four victories have been clean sheets, and WVU has held opponents to just 11 goals all season.
Junior Rylee Foster ranks No. 10 nationally with a 0.489 GAA. She has earned credit for 11 of WVU's 12 clean sheets.
Senior forward Sh'Nia Gordon paces the Mountaineers with 18 points (8 G, 2 A). With a goal against Radford last week, the Ocklawaha, Florida, native became the first player in WVU women's soccer history to score at least one goal in four consecutive NCAA Tournaments.
Sixteen different Mountaineers have accounted for the team's 44 goals this season, and WVU ranks No. 38 nationally with a 2.00 goals/game average. Senior defender Bianca St. Georges ranks second behind Gordon with seven goals, while sophomore midfielder Stefany Ferrer-vanGinkel sits at No. 3 with six scores.
The Demon Deacons advanced to the second round with a 1-0 (OT) win over Ohio State on Nov. 9, at Spry Stadium. Freshman midfielder Giovanna DeMarco tallied the golden goal with just 19 seconds remaining in the first overtime period.
