WVU Sets to Compete at Journeymen Collegiate Classic
November 10, 2018 04:10 PM | Wrestling
AMES, Iowa – The West Virginia University wrestling team sets to compete at the Journeymen MyHouse Collegiate Classic on Sunday, Nov. 10, at Hudson Valley Community College, in Schenectady, New York, with the first round of competition starting at 9 a.m. ET.
The tournament field features competition from nine universities, including four teams ranked inside the College NWCA/USA Today Top-25 Poll: No. 6 Lehigh, No. 8 NC State, No. 17 Purdue and No. 20 Lock Haven. The one-day event also highlights competition from Big 12 Conference foes Oklahoma and Utah Valley. Fourteen Mountaineers will represent WVU at the event, which will be broadcasted live on FloWrestling.com.
"It's another opportunity to get better, another opportunity to win, which is a good thing," first-year coach Tim Flynn said. "I think the competition will be a little bit stiffer in some weight classes, but a step up in competition will be good for them."
In its last competition, West Virginia sent 16 wrestlers to participate in the 2018 Hokie Open, at Berglund Arena, in Roanoke, Virginia, on Nov. 4. Ten Mountaineers finished in the top five in their respective weight classes, with redshirt sophomore Matthew Schmitt (133) and redshirt freshman Noah Adams (197) winning their division titles.
Schmitt went 5-0 in the 133-pound open division to claim his first tournament win of his career. Adams also recorded a perfect 4-0 mark to capture the 197-pound freshman/sophomore division title. Additionally, redshirt junior Zachary Moore (157) and sophomore Nick Kiussis (165) each earned third-place finishes in the open division, while redshirt junior David Smith placed fifth in the heavyweight open division.
"Matt and Noah wrestled really well," Flynn said. "Matt can score a lot of points. We just encourage him to keep throwing it on people. If he has his foot on the gas pedal, so to speak, he's hard to beat. Noah wrestles kind of the same way. He goes out, and he is real intense. He tries to score points all the time, maybe too much, as we saw in the first dual. That's a good thing. If we get kids wrestling like that, I think we can go places."
Five Mountaineers also joined Adams on the podium in the freshman/sophomore division. Redshirt freshman KJ Fenstermacher (125) and freshman Josh Ramirez (174) each collected third-place finishes, while sophomore Hunter DeLong placed fourth at 184 pounds. Additionally, redshirt freshmen Joey Thomas and Sean Mullican each claimed a fifth-place finish in the 125-pound and 285-pound pool, respectively.
Of note, 25 newcomers joined 10 letterwinners from last year's squad. Schmitt, a 2018 NCAA Qualifier, is the only Mountaineer to return to the lineup nationally ranked, sitting at No. 17 via the Open Mat. He was only pushed out of Flo's rankings because Nick Suriano of Rutgers, who previously wrestled at 125 pounds, was added to the mix. Schmitt leads the team with six wins on the year. Smith also has a team-high four wins by fall, while Schmitt and Adams are tied for the team lead in major decisions, with three.
Looking ahead, West Virginia will remain on the road, traveling to Ithaca, New York, to face Cornell on Saturday, Nov. 17, in a 1 p.m. matchup. Both squads will meet for just the second time in program history, as the Big Red earned a win over the Mountaineers in their first-ever meeting at the 2014 Journeymen Duals. Of note, Cornell placed ninth at the 2018 NCAA Championships.
West Virginia then returns to the WVU Coliseum to round out the month of November with a 1 p.m. match against Big 12 affiliate Northern Iowa on Sunday, Nov. 18. The Panthers own a 3-0 lead in the all-time series, with the last meeting taking place in 1991.
Prior to Sunday's match, the Mountaineers will host a free youth clinic, open to any and all entrants in eighth grade and below. All youth clinic participants will be admitted free to the match, with the match set to begin at 1 p.m. To pre-register, email WVUSportsMarketing@mail.wvu.edu. Additionally, the first 250 youth fans in attendance will receive a free WVU wrestling mask. Autographs also will take place following the match.
