Winners in six of their last seven matches, the Mountaineers (7-3-3, 3-1) look to bounce back following a 1-0 (OT) loss to No. 24 Baylor on Oct. 5. The defeat was WVU's first at home to a Big 12 opponent since joining the conference in 2012.
"We have the 13th-best team in the country coming to town," Mountaineer coach
Nikki Izzo-Brown said. "We know we have a tough game Sunday, especially coming off a 1-0 overtime loss. Texas is a great team, and we have to pull it together in a short amount of time."
WVU is 5-2-1 all-time against the Longhorns (10-1-2, 2-1-1) and has won five of the last seven matches. Sunday marks the second consecutive meeting between the teams as ranked opponents.
Last season, Cyera Hintzen's goal in the 88th minute was too much too late for the No. 5 Mountaineers, as they dropped a 1-0 decision to the No. 17 Longhorns on Sept. 24, 2017, in Austin. UT outshot WVU, 14-13. Junior
Rylee Foster made five saves for the Mountaineers, who forced Nicole Curry into five stops, too.
"I think our seniors are going to remember that loss from last season," Izzo-Brown added. "More importantly, I think they each understand how important Sunday's game is, and they're going to do everything they can to lead this team."
Sunday is the Longhorns' first trip to Morgantown since 2015, a 2-0 WVU win on Sept. 25 at Dick Dlesk Stadium. Then-freshman
Hannah Abraham tallied the game-winner in the 36th minute, with the assist credited to classmate
Bianca St. Georges.
The WVU defense has posted a shutout in five of its last six matches and has allowed just two goals since Sept. 7. Foster continues to rank No. 1 in the Big 12 with a 0.486 goals-against average (GAA).
Sophomore midfielder
Stefany Ferrer-vanGinkel paces the Mountaineer offense with 11 points (5 G, 1 A). Senior forward
Sh'Nia Gordon shows eight points on four goals.
The Longhorns are 2-1-2 away from Austin this season and 1-0-2 against ranked opponents. UT opened the weekend with a 2-1 victory at Iowa State on Oct. 5. Senior midfielder Kayra Dollas tallied the game-winner in the 87th minute after the teams traded goals early. Hintzen put UT on the board in the 15th minute with her 10th goal of the season, and ISU evened the score 57 second later.
Hintzen paces the Longhorns with 25 points (10 G, 5 A). She entered the weekend ranked No. 1 in the Big 12 in goals/game (0.75) and points/game (1.83).
Curry has played all 13 matches between the posts, allowing nine goals, earning credit for three of UT's four shutouts and making 35 saves. She ranks No. 4 in the conference with a 0.668 GAA.
