MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Thirteen from the No. 16-ranked West Virginia University women's soccer team were named to the Academic All-Big 12 Soccer Team, the league office announced today.
The 13 honors are a team record and top the previous season-best showing of 11, set in 2014.
All but one of the honorees landed on the Academic All-Big 12 First Team, also a program-best showing.
Of the Mountaineers honored, seniors Hannah Abraham (public health) and Bianca St. Georges (exercise physiology) claimed the first-team honor with a 4.00 grade point average (GPA). The duo are two of 19 Big 12 players boasting 4.00 GPAs. The first-team honors are the third career awards for the pair.
Seniors Vanessa Flores (exercise physiology) and Easther Mayi Kith (exercise physiology) also earned their third career first-team honors. Senior Grace Cutler (multidisciplinary studies) and Patricia Fernandez (exercise physiology) were named to the first team for the second time.
Six Mountaineers earned their first career Academic All-Big 12 First Team accolade: senior Amanda Saymon (exercise physiology), junior Rylee Foster (sport management) and sophomores Stefany Ferrer-vanGinkel (sport management), Lois Joel (political science), Lauren Segalla (psychology) and Grace Smith (landscape architecture).
Additionally, junior Jade Gentile (global supply chain management) earned her first career honor and was named to the second team.
In total, 128 student-athletes were honored by the Big 12 Conference, with 116 players named to the first team.
First team members consist of those who have maintained a 3.20 or better GPA, while the second-team selections hold a 3.00 to 3.19 GPA.
To qualify, student-athletes must maintain a 3.00 GPA or higher either cumulative or the two previous semesters and must have participated in 20 percent of their team's scheduled contests. Freshmen and transfers are not eligible in their first year of academic residence. Senior student-athletes who have participated for a minimum of two years and meet all the criteria except percent of participation also are eligible.
The Mountaineers (11-3-3, 7-1) conclude their 2018 regular-season slate against Kansas on Thursday, Oct. 25, at 7 p.m., at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium. Admission is free, courtesy of WVU Medicine. A win against the Jayhawks guarantees WVU at least a share of the 2018 Big 12 regular-season championship.
