MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Sophomore goalkeeper Steven Tekesky of the West Virginia University men's soccer team has been named the Mid-American Conference Player of the Week, the league announced on Tuesday.
The MAC honor is the first of Tekesky's career and the fourth for the Mountaineers this season, the most by any team in the league. WVU's four honors are the most since it joined the conference in 2012.
Tekesky turned in another impressive performance to lead West Virginia to a 5-1 victory over No. 20 SIU Edwardsville on Saturday night, with eight saves in the win. Six came in the first half, as SIUE had 12 shots, seven on goal. However, Tekesky made several phenomenal stops to hold the visitors to one goal, allowing the Mountaineers to rally to tie the match late in the first half and take the lead in the second.
A native of Raymore, Missouri, Tekesky ranks No. 15 nationally with a MAC-best 64 total saves in 2018, while he also paces the league in save percentage (.810) and saves per game (4.27). He is second in the conference in shutouts (5), goals-against average (1.003) and minutes played (1345:36). Tekesky has 10 wins this year, which ranks No. 9 in a single season in team history.
In his career, Tekesky's 0.99 goals-against average ranks No. 4 all-time in program history, while his save percentage of .774 currently is No. 6 in the WVU record books. His 13 career wins are tied for ninth-most in a career, and his eight career shutouts are No. 9 all-time.
In addition to Tekesky's honor, junior defender Albert Andres-Llop was named to the TopDrawerSoccer.com Team of the Week on Tuesday. Andres-Llop had a goal and an assist in Saturday's win over SIUE, his first goal and fourth assist of the year.
Along with Tekesky, senior midfielder Joey Piatczyc has been recognized by the MAC three times, on Aug. 28, Sept. 4, and Oct. 16.
Tekesky and the Mountaineers have a pair of big matches at home this week, beginning tonight with the Backyard Brawl against Pitt, at 7 p.m. ET. With a conference title on the line, West Virginia then hosts a Senior Night matchup against Bowling Green on Friday, Oct. 26, at 7 p.m. Tickets for both matches are available at WVUGAME.com or by calling 1-800 WVU GAME.
