NORMAN, Okla. – The No. 16-ranked West Virginia University women's soccer team concludes its two-match weekend road trip at Oklahoma on Sunday, Oct. 21, at 2 p.m. EST at John Crain Field.
Sunday's match will be broadcast on FOX Sports Regional.
The Mountaineers (10-3-3, 6-1) carry a three-match win streak into Sunday's contest and have won nine of their last 10 matches.
WVU stands alongside No. 13 Baylor at the top of the Big 12 Conference standings with a 6-1 record and 18 points. A Mountaineer win, coupled with a Baylor loss to Kansas Sunday, would guarantee WVU at least a share of the conference regular-season title.
The Mountaineers are 7-0-1 all-time against the Sooners and 1-0-1 in Norman. The last time WVU kicked at John Crain Field, the No. 4 Mountaineers settled for a 0-0 (2OT) draw on Oct. 9, 2015.
"We know it's going to be a hard game," Mountaineer coach Nikki Izzo-Brown said. "OU is a tough team, and we know it's going to take everything we have for this quick turnaround against Oklahoma."
Last season, No. 8 WVU trumped OU, 5-1, on Oct. 8, at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium. Five different Mountaineers accounted for the goals, including Heather Kaleiohi, who netted the game-winner in the 19th minute. WVU finished with a 21-5 shot advantage and forced OU into seven saves. The Sooners netted their loan goal, OU's first against WVU since 2014, in the 88th minute. The Mountaineers denied OU a corner kick and finished with nine of their own.
WVU opened the weekend with a late, 2-1 victory at Oklahoma State on Oct. 19. Senior forward Hannah Abraham netted the game-winner, her team-best eighth career game-winning goal, in the 87th minute, heading in a cross from senior midfielder Nadya Gill.
"You had senior-to-senior, and Hannah Abraham came up huge on that service from Nadya," Izzo-Brown said of WVU's game-winning goal. "It was picture perfect."
Senior defender Bianca St. Georges put WVU on the board first with a penalty kick, her third of the season, in the 20th minute. OSU evened the line with its own penalty kick in the 42nd minute.
The Mountaineers outshot OSU, 33-3, and forced the Cowgirls into seven saves. Junior Rylee Foster made one save for WVU, who also earned a 7-1 edge in corner kicks.
Sophomore midfielder Stefany Ferrer-vanGinkel continues to pace the attack with 12 points (5 G, 2 A). Senior forward Sh'Nia Gordon sits at No. 2 with 10 points (5 G), while St. Georges follows with eight points (4 G).
Foster ranks No. 1 in the Big 12 with a 0.55 goals-against average (GAA). The WVU defense has posted eight shutouts, seven credited to Foster, and allowed just eight shots on-goal to Big 12 opponents.
The Sooners (7-7-2, 3-3-1) opened the weekend with a comeback, 2-1 win over Iowa State on Oct. 19 at John Crain Field. Senior midfielder Marissa McMahand knotted the score at 1-1 off a penalty kick in the 22nd minute, and senior forward Emily Parker tallied the game-winner in the 53rd minute. The Sooners finished with a 14-10 shot edge and placed half of their attempts on-goal. Sophomore McKinely Crone made three saves, and ISU earned a 4-3 advantage in corner kicks.
Junior forward Kaylee Dao paces OU with 14 points (6 G, 2 A). McMahand is second on the team with 11 points (2 G, 7 A). Crone has started all 16 matches for OU and shows a 1.20 GAA.
