"We want to get better," WVU coach
Marlon LeBlanc said. "We told the guys that (after last Tuesday's loss), we had to learn from it and make sure we didn't make the same mistakes, and we had to make the improvements off of that game, after a loss. As a coaching staff, we have to find a way to do the same thing heading into Binghamton (after a win Saturday night). Binghamton will come in hungry, they'll come in here wanting to win. But, the goal is for us to do the same thing mentally. We're close to being really, really good. If we can continue to grow from wins as much as we do from a loss, then we'll be better Tuesday night as well.
The Mountaineers (6-4-0) bring a 4-1 home record into Tuesday's match, the last of three in a row at home and the final nonconference contest before Mid-American Conference action begins on Saturday. WVU is 1-1 in its current homestand and is unbeaten in 15 of its last 19 nonconference contests at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium.
WVU ranks No. 23 in the country with 19 total assists, while its 1.70 goals per game, 17 total goals and 53 points are all second-most in the MAC. West Virginia's 3.90 saves per game leads the league, and its .813 save percentage and 0.900 goals-against average is No. 2 in the conference.
The Bearcats (3-5-2, 2-0-0 America East) are riding a two-game win streak, with a pair of victories to open American East Conference play, and BU is undefeated in three of its last four. Binghamton leads the AEC and is No. 25 nationally with 4.80 saves per game, while its .762 save percentage is third in the conference.
Senior midfielder
Joey Piatczyc and junior midfielder
Sebastian Garcia-Herreros lead the team and are tied for No. 3 in the MAC with four assists and junior defender
Pascal Derwaritsch is fourth in the conference with a team-leading four goals. Derwaritsch and Piatczyc each have two game-winning goals, which is tied for second in the MAC, and are tied for the team lead with eight points apiece.
In goal, sophomore
Steven Tekesky ranks No. 20 nationally with four shutouts. He leads the MAC with 38 total saves and an average of 3.80 saves per game, and is second in the league with a .809 save percentage and a 0.907 goals-against average.
SCOUTING BINGHAMTON
Binghamton owns a 3-5-2 record and is 1-3-1 away from home. The Bearcats have won two in a row to begin America East action, with a 2-0 win vs. Hartford and a 2-1 victory on Saturday against New Hampshire. BU opened the year with three consecutive losses, but is undefeated in three of its last four. Just two of Binghamton's five losses came by more than one goal.
Haris Brkovic leads the team with three goals, while Noah Luescher has a team-best four assists, eight points, 27 shots and 13 shots on goal. Luescher is one of three players with two goals on the year. In goal, Chris Shutler has made 45 saves for a .750 save percentage, with two shutouts. He has allowed 15 goals for a 1.50 goals-against average.
Former Mountaineer player and coach Paul Marco is in his 17th season at Binghamton. He has led the Bearcats to two NCAA Tournaments, two America East regular-season titles and two tournament titles. Marco owns a 130-119-53 record at BU and a 177-181-57 career mark. A 1991 WVU graduate, Marco scored six goals in 32 career games for the Mountaineers from 1988-90. Following a four-year stint as an assistant coach, he served as West Virginia's head coach from 1996-2001, where he went 47-62-4. Marco was named the 1999 Big East Coach of the Year.
SERIES HISTORY VS. THE BEARCATS
The Mountaineers are 1-0 all-time against Binghamton, with a 2-1 victory in 2011. Andy Bevin scored both goals for WVU, ranked No. 12 in the country at the time. Bevin tied the game in the 31st minute and scored the game-winner 10 minutes later. The victory came in front of 1,850 fans at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium, the fifth-largest home crowd in program history.
UP NEXT: CONFERENCE OPENER
West Virginia commences Mid-American Conference play at Western Michigan on Saturday, Oct. 6. Kickoff in Kalamazoo, Michigan, is set for 4 p.m. ET at the reigning MAC regular-season champions. The contest is the first of three in a row on the road before the Mountaineers return home on Saturday, Oct. 20, against league foe SIU Edwardsville.
LAST TIME OUT: STREAK SNAPPED
A pair of second-half goals by junior defender
Ryan Kellogg led West Virginia to a 2-0 victory over Delaware on Sept. 29, at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium. Kellogg recorded his first two-goal game of his career as the Mountaineers shut out the Blue Hens for their fourth clean sheet of the season.
Kellogg led the Mountaineers with three shots and two shots on goal. His first career multi-goal game gives him three goals this season and four in his career. Kellogg's first goal came in the 62nd minute, and his second came less than 10 minutes later, in the 71st. His game-winning goal was the second of his career.
Garcia-Herreros assisted on both goals, while sophomore forward
Spenser Myers earned an assist on the first goal and sophomore midfielder
