West Virginia (2-3, 1-1 Big 12) and North Dakota State (5-5, 0-3 Big 12) will meet for the first time in program history on Sunday. Previously competing in the Western Wrestling Conference, NDSU has joined five other schools as affiliate members of the Big 12 during the 2015-16 academic year.
"North Dakota State is a tough, hard-nosed team," said fourth-year coach
Sammie Henson. "We might not have gone head-to-head with them in a dual-match setting, but our guys have wrestled against several of their wrestlers at tournaments in the last couple of years. We had the opportunity to watch tape and scout some of their tendencies this week, and we are ready to keep the momentum going from Thursday into tomorrow night's match-up."
West Virginia is coming off a thrilling 24-10 upset win over No. 18 Oklahoma, earning its second Big 12 Conference win in program history inside the WVU Coliseum on Thursday. The Mountaineers never trailed in the match, winning seven of 10 bouts to defeat the Sooners for the first time ever in Big 12 action. The last time West Virginia topped Oklahoma was in 1986 at a neutral site, which was when the two squads first met in the all-time series.
Redshirt junior
Zeke Moisey set the tone for West Virginia in the first bout of the evening, winning by fall over No. 17 Christian Moody in 1 minute, 11 seconds at 125 pounds. The Northampton, Pennsylvania, native avenged a loss to Moody at the Lindenwood Open on Nov. 18, as he collected his third straight dual-match win of the season.
North Dakota State won its third straight match Friday evening, topping Pitt in a 28-11 contest at the Fitzgerald Field House in Pittsburgh. The Bison won seven of 10 bouts, including four straight matches in the middle weights highlighted by No. 14 Clay Ream's last-second decision at 157 pounds. The Bison have not won a Big 12 match this season, though, falling to then-No. 13 Northern Iowa (Nov. 17), then-No. 3 Oklahoma State (Nov. 26) and Utah Valley (Dec. 15). NDSU's head coach Roger Kish led the Bison to a fourth-place finish at the 2017 Big 12 Wrestling Championship, collecting a 4-3 league mark in the team's second season of competition in the Big 12. Ream holds a team-best 8-1 record in dual matches thus far.
Of note, West Virginia has faced four teams ranked inside the USA Today/NWCA Coaches' Poll thus far, with No. 25 North Dakota State becoming the Mountaineers' fifth ranked opponent of the 2017-18 season. West Virginia has already topped two teams inside the top 25, collecting wins over then-No. 25 Pitt (Dec. 9) and No. 18 Oklahoma (Jan. 4) at home.
Redshirt senior
Jacob A. Smith is ranked nationally in the top 10 by a trio of media outlets at 197 pounds. The Charleston, West Virginia, native is ranked No. 5 by Intermat and FloWrestling and appears at No. 10 according to The Open Mat. Moisey, a 2015 NCAA All-American, remains at No. 19 in Intermat's latest top-20 poll at 125 pounds and checks in at No. 20 via FloWrestling.
Moisey and redshirt freshman
Matthew Schmitt boast a team-best 14-6 overall mark at 125 pounds and 133 pounds, respectively. Redshirt sophomore
Zachary Moore has a team-best 4-1 dual-match record at 157 pounds. Moisey also pace the Mountaineers' with 15 match points on the year, followed by Moore with 12. Schmitt leads the team in major decisions with five, while Moisey sports a team-best 12 takedowns in 2017 thus far.
Looking ahead, the Mountaineers will take a week off from competition before hitting the road for their first Big 12 road swing of the year. West Virginia will take on No. 3 Oklahoma State on Friday, Jan. 19, in Stillwater, Oklahoma, followed by a meet at Iowa State on Sunday, Jan. 21.
