DENVER, Colo. – The West Virginia University wrestling team returns to action on Sunday following a tough loss at No. 5 Oklahoma State, as the Mountaineers travel to Ames, Iowa, for a match against the Cyclones at the Hilton Coliseum.
The match is slated to begin at 3 p.m. ET. It will be broadcasted live on CyclonesTV with live scoring available on TrackWrestling.
Sunday is the 19th all-time meeting between the Mountaineers (3-4, 2-2 Big 12) and the Cyclones (5-5, 0-2 Big 12). Though not the most prolific, it is one of the longest-running series in WVU program history, with both teams going head-to-head for the first time in 1922.
The Mountaineers earned their first-ever Big 12 win against Iowa State last season, as now-sophomore heavyweight
Brandon Ngati pinned Joe Scanlan in the final bout of the day to claim a thrilling comeback win over the Cyclones, 22-20, on Feb. 12 inside the WVU Coliseum. Last season's victory was West Virginia's first win over Iowa State in 14 years. The Cyclones lead the all-time series, 16-2, with both programs joining the Big 12 Conference in the summer of 2012.
West Virginia is coming off a tough loss at No. 5 Oklahoma State on Friday, dropping a 29-6 contest to the Cowboys inside Gallagher-Iba Arena in Stillwater, Oklahoma. Freshman
Nick Kiussis picked up the Mountaineers lone victory of the evening, winning by fall over Dalton Moran in 2:04 at 165 pounds.
A pair of Mountaineer wrestlers rank nationally by several publications this week, as redshirt senior
Jacob A. Smith headlines the team with a trio of top-15 rankings at 197 pounds. The Charleston, West Virginia, native is ranked No. 12 by FloWrestling, appears at No. 13 according to Intermat and checks in at No. 15 via The Open Mat. A native of Northampton, Pennsylvania, redshirt junior
Zeke Moisey appears at No. 13 via The Open Mat at 125 pounds. He also checks in at No. 14 via Intermat's Top-20 Poll and No. 16 via FloWrestling.
Moisey and redshirt freshman
Matthew Schmitt (133) are tied for the team lead with 15 wins on the year, with each of them boasting a 15-7 overall record in their respective weight classes. Moisey paces the Mountaineers' with 19 match points and sports a team-best 16 takedowns and four pins on the year. Kiussis also has tallied four wins by fall this season.
Iowa State posted a 4-1 record at the Virginia Duals last weekend and have now won five of their last six contests. The Cyclones took down Virginia, Old Dominion, Lock Haven and Fresno State at the Virginia Duals, with the squads only defeat coming at the hands of eventual tournament champion Arizona State. Head coach Kevin Dresser and his staff have had to manage a very young Iowa State roster this season. Of the 34 Iowa State wrestlers, only 17 of them were on the team last year. The squad also consists of 26 underclassmen (freshmen or sophomores). At 141 pounds, No. 16 Kanen Storr, a redshirt freshman, leads the team with eight dual wins and 29 takedowns.
Looking ahead, the Mountaineers will take a week off from competition before they travel to Colorado for a pair of Big 12 matches at Air Force and Northern Colorado on Feb. 2 and Feb. 3, respectively.
