
Mayi Kith Honored, Mountaineers Rank No. 3

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – West Virginia University women's soccer junior Easther Mayi Kith has been named the Big 12 Conference Defensive Player of the Week. Additionally, the Mountaineers rank No. 3 in all three major polls this week.
A native of Quebec City, Quebec, Mayi Kith's honor is her first of the season and the second of her career.
A center back, Mayi Kith anchored the Mountaineer defense and pushed WVU to a stellar defensive showing in two wins at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium over the weekend. In a 2-1 win against No. 1 Penn State on Sept. 2, the backline held the Nittany Lions to just three shots on goal, with PSU's lone score a penalty kick. Penn State entered the match averaging 3.33 goals-per-game. The Mountaineers' victory was their first in program history over a No. 1 opponent in Morgantown.
Two days later, the Mountaineers denied Wright State a shot and a corner kick in a 2-0 victory on Sept. 4. Monday night marked the sixth time in program history and the second time in three seasons WVU denied an opponent a shot. The Mountaineers last achieved the record feat in a 4-0 win over Longwood on Sept. 13, 2015. The Raiders were the second team in three matches to not earn a corner kick against the WVU defense. The shutout was the team's third of the season.
TCU's Allison Ganter is the Big 12 Offensive Player of the Week, and Taylor Olson of Oklahoma State is the Big 12 Freshman of the Week.
The Mountaineers (4-1) moved up to No. 3 in this week's United Soccer Coaches, TopDrawerSoccer.com and Soccer America Polls. WVU ranked as high as No. 6 last week.
UCLA (6-0) and Stanford (4-1) rank No. 1 and No. 2, respectively, in all three polls. Clemson (6-0) follows WVU at No. 4 in the coaches' poll, while Penn State (3-1) dropped to No. 5.
North Carolina (4-1) ranks No. 6, South Carolina (5-1) sits at No. 7 and Virginia (4-1) follows at No. 8. Florida (5-1) and Texas A&M (3-0-1) round out the top 10.

The Mountaineers close their three-week homestand next weekend with a pair of matches at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium. WVU kicks against the Blue Devils on Friday, Sept. 8, at 7 p.m., and against Richmond on Sunday, Sept. 10, at 1 p.m. Friday is WVU Faculty/Staff night, and free admission will be given to any WVU faculty and staff member who shows their WVU employee ID. Youth Soccer Day follows on Sunday, and all fans who wear a youth soccer jersey will earn free admittance into the match. Additionally, a free postgame clinic will follow the match.
