Kellogg Wins It In Final Minute for Mountaineers

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Sophomore Ryan Kellogg scored the game's only goal in the 90th minute to send the West Virginia University men's soccer team to a 1-0 win over Dayton on Saturday night.
Kellogg's goal, the first of his career, came with 28 seconds remaining in the match as the Mountaineers (6-1-2) won their third in a row. After getting out-shot 10-9, and allowing Dayton to have three shots on goal, Kellogg's goal was the lone shot on goal in the match for WVU.
The game-winner began with a free kick from midfield by junior goalkeeper Stephen Banick. Inside the box, the Dayton defense headed it out, right to Kellogg. The ball bounced off Kellogg's chest, he dribbled once, and at 89:32 from the edge of the box sent a ball in that weaved around the defense and found the back of the net.
"It might have been exciting for a lot of others, for me it was really frustrating," WVU coach Marlon LeBlanc said. "For my team it was really frustrating. We didn't play well tonight. I think we looked like a team that's played a lot of games in a short amount of time. All that said, to not play our best and still find a way to win the game was really good. That Dayton team was the better team on the evening, but at the same stage, we have to give my kids a lot of credit for being resilient and finding a way to win the game."
The home game, in front of a season-high crowd of 1,008, came after the Mountaineers played three in a row on the road in seven days. It was West Virginia's fourth of five games in a 14-day span.
Banick stopped three Dayton shots to turn in his sixth clean sheet of the season. Along with his goal, Kellogg led the Mountaineers with three shots in the contest. Senior Jad Arslan had two.
Arslan had the game's first shot in the sixth minute. After weaving through several Flyer defenders into the box, his shot was blocked. Eight minutes later, WVU had another chance off a free kick on the end line near the corner, but the ball in was headed high by sophomore Logan Lucas.
Dayton's best chance early in the game came in the 17th minute on a free kick from inside the far corner of the box. However, Banick made the save to keep it a scoreless match.
Junior Jorge Quintanilla had a shot blocked in the 24th minute, which came a minute after Dayton also had a chance that went high.
The last good chance of the first half came in the 31st minute, when Dayton had a breakaway opportunity. However, senior Steven James, going one-on-one with the Dayton attacker, blocked the ball away at the edge of the box.
Three minutes into the second half, Arslan had a corner kick, but the Dayton keeper snagged the ball inside the six amidst traffic, before WVU could make contact. Two minutes later, in the 60th minute, freshman Spenser Myers had a header inside the six, but it went high.
The Mountaineer defense had a great play in the 68th minute, clearing a ball from inside the box that got past Banick. That prevented the Flyers from a chance to take a lead, with several players in the box on the play.
In the 80th minute, Kellogg nearly provided the heroics 10 minutes early. From the near corner of the 18, he sent a shot to the far corner of the net, but the ball would not bend enough and went just wide of the post.
Kellogg had another chance go high in the 85th minute, before a Dayton opportunity was high in the 86th.
Banick made a great save in the 87th minute, minutes before Kellogg's eventual game-winner in the 90th.
Up next for the Mountaineers, the Backyard Brawl resumes on Tuesday, Sept. 26, at 7 p.m. ET in Pittsburgh. The matchup at Pitt is the first between the two teams since 2011, a 2-0 WVU win in Pittsburgh.
