SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Two goals in the opening 24 minutes and another clean sheet propelled the West Virginia University men's soccer team to a 2-0 victory at Santa Clara on Sunday night.
On a warm evening at Stevens Stadium – Buck Shaw Field, the Mountaineers (2-0) shut out their opponent for the second consecutive match to open the season. WVU faced the Broncos (0-2) for the first time in program history after earning a 1-0 win at Cal on Friday in the season-opener.
Senior Jad Arslan scored in the ninth minute, his second game-winning goal in WVU's two-game trip to California. Junior Jorge Quintanilla added his first career goal in the 24th minute. Junior goalkeeper Stephen Banick earned his second career win and shutout, making four saves for the second consecutive match.
"We went on the road and won two games this weekend, the second one here against a very good Santa Clara team," WVU coach Marlon LeBlanc said. "Cal on Friday, Santa Clara here today. It's tough to go on the road and win games. We came all the way to the west coast and beat two very, very good teams, and I'm very proud of my team for going out and doing it."
Arslan scored his second goal of the season and 13th of his career at 8:18. On an attempt to clear the ball by Santa Clara, the ball was intercepted, where Arslan was able to go behind the defense and put the Mountaineers ahead, 1-0. Freshman Brendan Hogan earned an assist, the first of his career.
WVU made it 2-0 15 minutes later at 23:45, when Quintanilla received a cross on the far side of the box from sophomore Sebastian Garcia-Herreros. The play began on the near sideline, when senior Louis Thomas passed the ball to freshman Brendan Hogan, who tipped it to Garcia-Herreros.
West Virginia had four shots, three on goal, while Santa Clara was credited with 18 shots, five on goal. However, the WVU defense prevented SCU from getting many good chances in the contest.
The home side had two good chances in the first three minutes, but the Mountaineer defense blocked the first shot before Banick saved the second.
Arslan found the back of the net in the ninth minute, and seven minutes later, the WVU defense again came up with several blocks to prevent the ball from reaching the box. A header from inside the six in the 20th minute went just high over the crossbar.
Four minutes later, Quintanilla scored his first collegiate goal. The Mountaineers would keep the 2-0 lead into halftime thanks to strong play by Banick in the box on crosses.
Sophomore Pascal Derwaritsch nearly made it 3-0 in the final seconds of the first half off a corner kick, but the Santa Clara defense cleared the ball off the line.
With the Broncos on the offensive attack, Banick and the defense made a great stop in the 67th minute. Banick's save on a clear shot from the far side was followed by a block off the line by the Mountaineer defenders.
Four minutes later, Banick made another great save to preserve the shutout.
The Broncos had several chances in the final five minutes, but a turnover on a cross in the box and several blocks outside of the 18 prevented the home side from breaking the shutout.
