Arslan Named Student-Athlete of the Week

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - Following a week where he netted two game-winning goals, West Virginia men's soccer senior Jad Arslan has been named the WVU Student-Athlete of the Week, presented by University Apartments.

On Friday, Arslan scored his 12th-career goal in the 20th minute to give the Mountaineers a 1-0 victory over Cal at Edwards Stadium in Berkeley, California.
 
Arslan scored again in the ninth minute Sunday to mark his second game-winning goal of the weekend, and WVU rolled to a 2-0 win over Santa Clara in Santa Clara, California.
 
The senior shows 13 career goals and five game-winning tallies. In addition to a team-best two goals and four points, Arslan led the squad with three shots, two on-goal.
 
This Week in Women's Soccer: The top-ranked Mountaineers (2-1) stay in Morgantown for a pair of matches at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium next weekend … WVU opens against No. 9 Penn State on Saturday, Sept. 2, at 7 p.m., and follows with a match against Wright State on Monday, Sept. 4, at 6 p.m. … Saturday, is Camper Reunion Day, and free admission will be given to those who wear their 2017 camp t-shirt … additionally, NCAA College Cup rings will be given to the first 1,000 fans in attendance … it's a Gold Rush, and fans are encouraged to wear gold in support of the Mountaineers … Monday is a doubleheader with the men's team, and one ticket is good for both matches.
 
Last Week in Women's Soccer: WVU opened its home season with a 2-1, double-overtime loss to No. 10 Virginia on Aug. 24 before bouncing back with a 3-0 victory against Duquesne on Aug. 27 … after falling behind 1-0 to the Cavaliers in the 68th minute, the Mountaineers equalized 10 minutes later of a header by senior midfielder Alli Magaletta … UVA earned the golden goal in the 106th minute … both teams finished with 12 shots and four corner kicks Thursday night, while UVA earned a 7-4 edge in shots on-goal … on Sunday, junior forward Hannah Abraham netted the game-winner in the 10th minute, and senior midfielder Carla Portillo and junior defender Bianca St. Georges added insurance goals in the second half … WVU held Duquesne to just three shots, all in the first half, and finished with a 6-0 advantage in corner kicks.
 
Notes: WVU played in front of 2,421 fans Thursday night, the third-best attendance mark in program history … St. Georges' goal against Duquesne was the first of her career, and she finished the weekend with four points (1 G, 2 A) .. St. Georges and Portillo each earned three points on Sunday (1 G, 1 A), a career single-game best for the duo … Foster's shutout Sunday was the 10th of her career.
 
This Week in Men's Soccer: West Virginia returns home to host Wright State on Friday, Sept. 1, at 7 p.m. ET … the home opener at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium is a Dollar Day, with all tickets and select concession items available for just $1 … tickets are available at WVUGAME.com, 1-800-WVU GAME or on gameday at the DDSS ticket office.
 
Last Week in Men's Soccer: The Mountaineers (2-0) opened the season with a pair of wins in California … WVU began the year with a 1-0 win at California on Friday before a 2-0 victory at Santa Clara on Sunday night … senior Jad Arslan scored the game-winning goal in both matches, while junior Jorge Quintanilla scored his first career goal in Sunday's win … junior goalkeeper Stephen Banick made his career debut and made four saves in both matches to earn a pair of shutouts.
 
Notes: WVU opened the season with a 2-0 record for the first time since 2014 … senior Jad Arslan's two goals gives him 13 in his career, five of the game-winners … junior Jorge Quintanilla scored his first career goal on Sunday after earning his first career assist on Friday … freshman Brendan Hogan earned an assist on both goals in Sunday's win, the first assists of his career, while junior Rushawn Larmond and sophomore Sebastian Garcia-Herreros also notched assists on Sunday … WVU's games at Cal and Santa Clara marked the first time in program history the Mountaineers played either team.
 
Coach Marlon LeBlanc after Sunday's win at Santa Clara: "We went on the road and won two games this weekend, the second one here against a very good Santa Clara team," WVU coach Marlon LeBlanc said. "Cal on Friday, Santa Clara here today. It's tough to go on the road and win games. We came all the way to the west coast and beat two very, very good teams, and I'm very proud of my team for going out and doing it."
 
This Week in Volleyball: West Virginia heads to Minneapolis, Minnesota, for three matches as part of the Diet Coke Classic this weekend … the Mountaineers face host No. 4-ranked Minnesota at 8 p.m. on Friday before taking on Tennessee (noon) and UTSA (4:30 p.m.) on Saturday.
 
Last Week in Volleyball: West Virginia opened the season at home with the WVU Invitational on Friday and Saturday at the Coliseum … the Mountaineers claimed a 3-1 season-opening win over Delaware on Friday behind 14 kills from Mia Swanegan … WVU swept UT-Martin, 3-0, on Saturday morning … Payton Caffrey had a team-best 10 kills while Swanegan added six blocks … the team wrapped the weekend by hosting No. 6 Penn State, suffering a 3-0 setback to the Nittany Lions … Caffrey had nine kills, while Swanegan and Natania Levak each had seven in the loss.
 
Notes: Sophomore outside hitter Payton Caffrey and freshman libero/defensive specialist Alexa Hasting were named to the WVU Invitational All-Tournament Team … Caffrey led the squad with 3.10 kills per set … Hasting  took over at libero against UT-Martin and Penn State and finished with a team-leading 18 digs this weekend … Mia Swanegan led the blocking effort with 1.20 blocks per set … the team faced perennial contender Penn State in the opening weekend for the second straight season … a crowd of 1,332 fans was in attendance for Saturday evening's tilt with the Nittany Lions … six newcomers saw action this weekend … in addition to Hasting, freshmen Katie DeMeo and Lindsay Proctor earned starts for the Mountaineers … freshmen Ava Richards and Briana Lynch also saw action in the rotation while senior transfer Emma Anderson split time at setter.
 
This Week in Cross Country: West Virginia begins the 2017 season at the Lehigh Invitational in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, on Friday, Sept. 1 at 6:15 p.m. … Lehigh's Goodman Campus Cross Country Course will host this year's NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional on Nov. 10, allowing the Mountaineers to get a first look at the course this week.
 
Notes: WVU returns a strong contingent of veterans this season, including three All-Mid-Atlantic Regional performers and two NCAA Cross Country Championships qualifiers. Redshirt seniors Amy Cashin, Maggie Drazba and Jillian Forsey all finished in the top 25 of last year's regional meet, while Drazba and Forsey advanced to nationals. … WVU was ranked No. 20 in FloTrack's 2017 FloXC Countdown last weekend ... it's the first time the Mountaineers have been ranked in a preseason top 25 list since 2015. … the Mountaineers last raced at Lehigh on Oct. 1, 2016 at the Paul Short 6k Run ... the team finished third. … coach Sean Cleary is set to begin his 11th season as the head coach of the WVU cross country team ... Cleary has been with the program for 25 years.
 
Coach Sean Cleary ahead of Friday's meet at Lehigh: "The biggest reason why we're going to Lehigh is because the NCAA region championships are there," Cleary said. "We'll bring the team, we'll train on the course and a number of girls will race on it. When we come home, those that don't have as much experience on that course will have a much greater view of where we're going down the road."
