Buchanan to Attend Honda Cup Award Ceremony

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – West Virginia University women’s soccer defender Kadeisha Buchanan will join 11 other finalists vying for the Honda Cup at the 2017 Collegiate Women Sports Awards Show presented by Honda on Monday, June 26, at the USC Galen Center Founders Room in Los Angeles.
The Collegiate Woman Athlete of the Year will be announced live on television, with the show set to air on CBS Sports Network at 9 p.m. EDT.
The Honda Sport Award winner for soccer, Buchanan, a native of Brampton, Ontario, will be joined at the ceremony by Mountaineer coach Nikki Izzo-Brown.
“I’m looking forward to celebrating this elite award and honor with Kadeisha and her family in Los Angeles,” Izzo-Brown said. “She has put in so much work and sacrificed a lot for this moment, and I am truly honored for the chance to share in this celebration with some of the greatest in college athletics.”
Presented annually by the CWSA to the top female athletes in 12 NCAA-sanctioned sports, the Honda Cup signifies “the best of the best in collegiate athletics.” The 12 honorees were chosen by a vote of administrators from more than 1,000 NCAA member schools and among four finalists in each sport.
The 11 additional Honda Sports Award winners are Inky Ajanaku (Stanford, volleyball), Kelly Barnhill (Florida, softball), Katie Ledecky (Stanford, swimming and diving), Alex McMurtry (Florida, gymnastics), Greta Nauk (Delaware, field hockey), Kelsey Plum (Washington, basketball), Karissa Schweizer (Missouri, cross country), Zoe Stukenberg (Maryland, lacrosse), Monica Vaughn (Arizona State, golf), Kendell Williams (Georgia, track and field) and Belinda Woolcock (Florida, tennis).
The Top Three finalists for the Collegiate Woman Athlete of the Year will be announced first Monday evening. These athletes exemplify the very best attributes of all Honda Sports Award winners. The Top Three Award began in 2009-10; prior to that, the committee recognized a Top Five starting in 2004-05.
Three soccer players have previously won the Honda Cup: Mia Hamm (North Carolina, 1994), Cindy Daws (Notre Dame, 1997) and Christine Sinclair (Portland, 2006). The last soccer athlete named to the Top Three was Raquel Rodriquez (Penn State) in 2016.
Breanna Stewart (Connecticut, basketball) won the Honda Cup in 20016.
The CWSA is celebrating its 41st year of honoring the nation’s top NCAA women athletes, recognizing superior athletic skills, leadership, academic excellence and eagerness to participate in community service. Since commencing its sponsorship in 1986, Honda has been a 31-year sponsor and has provided more than $3.1 million in institutional grants to the universities of the award winners and nominees to support women’s athletics programs at the institutions.
