MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Devin Brown went 4-1 on the day to finish third in his freestyle weight class at the 2017 Phil Portuese Northeast Regional at Koehler Field House in East Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania, on Saturday.
Brown represented the Morgantown-based Mountaineer Regional Training Center (MRTC) at 57 kilograms at the event.
“This is a great start for the MRTC and WVU wrestling,” WVU coach Sammie Henson said. “Freestyle wrestling makes champions and keeps our student-athletes focused in the offseason. Devin represented well at the NE Regional. We look forward to more success at University Nationals at the end of the month.”
Brown won a 5-4 decision over Jared Brickley (Olivet Wrestling Club) before winning a 12-0 tech. fall over Anthony Petril (Kutztown Wrestling Club) in the quarterfinals. After dropping a semifinal match to national champion Darian Cruz (Lehigh Valley Wrestling Club), Brown bounced back with a 10-0 tech. fall of Austin Petril (Kutztown Wrestling Club) in the consolation semis. He then topped Anthony Petril again in a 24-16 decision for third place.
Kyler Rea and Dayton Garrett also competed in the event. Rea went 3-2 at 70 kg, while Garrett posted a 4-2 mark at 74 kg.
