April 27, 2017 05:03 PM | Baseball
MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Senior first baseman Jackson Cramer has been named a finalist for the 2017 Senior CLASS Award, it was announced on Thursday.
An acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School, the Senior CLASS Award focuses on the total student-athlete and encourages students to use their platform in athletics to make a positive impact as leaders in their communities.
Cramer is one of 10 baseball finalists and one of two from the Big 12 Conference.
“Jackson has had a great career at West Virginia, both on and off the field,” WVU coach Randy Mazey said. “He is a great leader on our team, a great student and a role model within the community. Jackson is a great ambassador for WVU baseball and West Virginia University.”
Fan voting has begun to help select the Senior CLASS Award winner. Fans are encouraged to vote on seniorCLASSaward.com through June 7. Fan votes will be combined with media and Division I head coaches’ votes to determine the winner. The winner will be announced during the 2017 College World Series in June.
Cramer has started all 39 games for the 25th-ranked Mountaineers this season. A two-time All-Big 12 Second Team honoree, Cramer leads the team with seven home runs and a .497 slugging percentage, and is second with nine doubles, third with 45 hits and fourth with a .298 batting average.
In the classroom, Cramer has shown success every semester at WVU, and has been recognized for his academics every year. A native of Coppell, Texas, Cramer was named to the Academic All-Big 12 Second Team as a junior, the Academic All-Big 12 First Team as a sophomore and the Academic All-Big 12 Rookie Team as a freshman. Additionally, he has been named to the Big 12 Commissioner’s Honor Roll, the Garrett Ford Academic Honor Roll and the Dean’s List throughout his career.
In a unique position as one of two seniors on this year’s roster, Jackson has been an important leader both on and off the field and has stepped into his role as a leader this year. After being a leader on the field throughout his career, Cramer has adapted to become a strong leader off the field and in the locker room as well. He succeeds athletically, academically and is a positive role model for his teammates.
Throughout his WVU career, Cramer has been involved in the Morgantown community. In addition to interacting with fans and community members on gameday, Cramer and his teammates have volunteered at various functions in the Morgantown community, including the Color Me Rad 5K run.
Cramer and the Mountaineers are back in action this weekend, when they host Oklahoma from April 28-30. The series between WVU and OU will begin on Friday, April 28, at 6:30 p.m. ET. Saturday’s contest is set for a 4 p.m. first pitch, and Sunday’s finale is at 11:30 a.m. Tickets are still available for all three games, at 1-800-WVU GAME, WVUGAME.com or at the Mountaineer Ticket Office in the WVU Coliseum.
