MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University women’s soccer team opens its 2017 spring season against Cincinnati on Sunday, March 26, at 2 p.m., at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium. The match is free and open to the public.
Sunday marks the Mountaineers’ return to competition since finishing their historical run through the 2016 NCAA College Cup with a National Runner-Up finish.
“We are excited for our first game of the spring season against Cincinnati,” WVU associate head coach Lisa Stoia said. “This match will be a great opportunity to continue our development as a team in a game setting where we will be challenged. The athletes have been working hard all spring in training. This Sunday is a good chance for us to see where we are and where we need to continue to grow.”
The five-time reigning Big 12 Conference champion Mountaineers finished the 2016 campaign with a 23-2-2 mark, including a perfect 8-0 mark in conference play. Five juniors return to lead WVU this spring, including 2016 leading scorer Michaela Abam, who finished with a team-best 33 points (12 G, 8 A) last year.
UC finished the 2016 season at 11-5-4. The Bearcats’ season ended with a 0-0 double-overtime draw against USF in the American Athletic Conference Tournament on Nov. 2.
