Trio of Grapplers Rank Nationally

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Three West Virginia University wrestlers remain ranked inside the top 20 of their respective weight classes, as announced by several publications on Tuesday.
Redshirt senior Jacob A. Smith is ranked nationally in the top 10 by a trio of media outlets at 197 pounds. The Charleston, West Virginia, native is ranked No. 5 by Intermat and FloWrestling and appears at No. 10 according to The Open Mat. Smith faced No. 3 Jared Haught of Virginia Tech in WVU's most recent dual match, dropping a hard-fought 2-1 bout to Haught on Dec. 22 in Blacksburg.
Redshirt junior Zeke Moisey remains at No. 19 in Intermat's latest top-20 poll at 125 pounds. He also appears at No. 20 via FloWrestling. The Northampton, Pennsylvania, native earned his second dual match win of the season, recording a 10-3 decision over Tech's Kyle Norstrem on Dec. 22. Moisey, who leads the team with 11 takedowns on the year, registered a trio of takedowns as well as two nearfall points in the victory.
At 157 pounds, redshirt sophomore Zachary Moore enters the national rankings for the third straight week. The Oklahoma City native checks in at No. 20 via The Open Mat. Unranked Moore earned a hard-fought 3-1 decision over Pitt's Taleb Rahmani, who was ranked as high as No. 17 via FloWrestling, on Dec. 9. Moore then suffered his first dual match loss of the season, dropping an 8-2 decision to B.C. LaPrade of Tech on Dec. 22 to move to 3-1 on the year.
Following a holiday break, West Virginia will take on back-to-back Big 12 foes in Oklahoma and North Dakota State on Jan. 4 and Jan. 7, respectively. The Sooners currently rank at No. 19 nationally, while North Dakota State received two votes during the week of Dec. 19.
Family Day is scheduled for the 7 p.m. Oklahoma match on Thursday, Jan. 4. Families can purchase four tickets and a $15 concession voucher for $25. The Mountaineers last Dollar Day of the season will follow three days later, as the team takes on Big 12 foe North Dakota State in a 7 p.m. match on Sunday, Jan. 7.
