MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Redshirt sophomore Zachary Moore will wrestle in the 157-pound Consolation Round of 8 after leading the West Virginia University wrestling team on the first day of competition at the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational at the Las Vegas Convention Center on Friday.
After falling in the Championship Round of 32, Moore notched a 4-0 mark in the consolation bracket and will face Taleb Rahmani of Pitt in Saturday's Consolation Round of 8.
Moore opened the tournament with a 18-7 major decision over Northern Colorado's Taylor Kinn before falling to North Dakota State's Clay Ream in the Round of 32 (4:47). Moore bounced back in the consolation bracket, though, winning by fall over Northern Iowa's Paden Moore in less than 20 seconds. He then went on to claim a pair of decisions over Air Force and Virginia, respectively, before winning by fall over American's Eric Hong in 1 minute, 6 seconds.
"He believed in himself today," said fourth-year coach Sammie Henson. "He wrestled with a lot of confidence today, and he believed in himself. Hopefully, that carries into tomorrow."
Eight other Mountaineers saw action today.
"This is the toughest I have ever seen this tournament," Henson said. "It's awesome. It's a good measuring stick for us, and I was proud of the way each of them wrestled today. We can take a lot of positives from today. We just have to keep doing what we've been doing. We have depth, and I believe in these guys."
Redshirt freshman Matthew Schmitt, ranked No. 19 by The Open Mat, bounced back from a first-round loss with a solid win in the first round of the consolation bracket. At 133, Schmitt dropped a 6-4 decision to Kent State's Anthony Tutolo before claiming back-to-back wins over Ty Schilling of Cal Poly and Jens Lantz of Wisconsin, respectively. Schmitt later dropped a 6-2 decision in the Consolation Round of 16 to No. 6-seed Dennis Gustafson of Virginia Tech.
The Mountaineers will wrap up the Cliff Keen Invitational on Saturday. Action begins at 11 a.m. ET, with Round 7 Consolation 2nd of 8, followed by Round 8 Championship Semifinals, Round 9 Consolation Semifinals, Consolation Finals fifth, sixth, seventh and eighth places. The Championship Finals for first, second, third and fourth place will begin at 6 p.m. ET.
Live results and video for the event will be featured on FloWrestling.org.
