MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Redshirt senior Jacob A. Smith and redshirt junior Zeke Moisey of the West Virginia University wrestling team remain ranked inside the top 20 of their respective weight classes, as announced by several publications on Tuesday.
Smith is ranked nationally in the top 7 by a trio of media outlets at 197 pounds despite not competing in a Mountaineer singlet last weekend. The Charleston, West Virginia, native appears at No. 6 according to Open Mat and is ranked No. 7 via Intermat and FloWrestling.
Following a 4-2 record at the Clarion Open on Sunday to open the season, Moisey comes in at No. 12 in FloWrestling's latest top-20 poll. The Northampton, Pennsylvania, native also ranks No. 13 in the Intermat poll and checks in at No. 17 via Open Mat at his weight of 125 pounds.
Moisey returned to the mat for the first time last weekend after redshirting the 2016-17 academic year. He collected three straight wins to open his pool at the Clarion Open, but fell to Clarion's No. 18 Jake Gromacki in the semifinal round of competition.
Smith spent the majority of the 2016-17 season in the top 10 before suffering a season-ending injury in the Big 12 Championship match. Over the course of the season, he posted a 20-5 overall mark and went 14-2 in dual matches and 6-1 in Big 12 action. He ended the regular season on a 12-match win streak.
Up next, the Mountaineers will take a break in competition before traveling to St. Charles, Missouri, for the Lindenwood Open on Saturday, Nov. 18. The tournament is set to begin at 8 a.m. ET.
