MORGANTOWN, W.Va. –
West Virginia University wrestler redshirt freshman Matthew Schmitt moved up one spot in The Open Mat Poll, while redshirt senior Jacob A. Smith and redshirt junior Zeke Moisey continue to rank inside the top 20 of their respective weight classes, announced by several publications on Tuesday.
At 133 pounds, Schmitt checks in at No. 19 via The Open Mat. The Platte City, Missouri, native claimed a major decision over Nebraska's Brian Peska in the Mountaineers' home opener vs. the No.13-ranked Cornhuskers on Saturday to move to 10-2 on the year.
Two first-period takedowns gave Schmitt a 4-1 lead, which he made it 5-1 after escaping from the bottom to start the second. Schmitt then used a two-second near fall to his advantage in the third and final period, finishing off the match with another takedown to claim the 10-2 major decision over Peska at 133 pounds.
Smith is ranked in the top 8 nationally by a trio of media outlets at 197 pounds. The Charleston, West Virginia, native appears at No. 6 according to Intermat and FloWrestling and is ranked No. 8 by The Open Mat.
Moisey comes in at No. 17 in Intermat's latest top-20 poll. The Northampton, Pennsylvania, native also ranks No. 18 via FloWrestling at his weight of 125 pounds.
Of note, freshman Noah Adams wrestled unattached at the Mat-Town Open Tournament at Lock Haven on Sunday, going 3-0 in his pool to claim first place at 197 pounds. Adams claimed an 8-5 decision over Rutgers' Anthony Messner, who also wrestled unattached, in the first round of competition. He advanced to the finals, winning on a technical fall over Lock Haven's unattached wrestler Ray Bernot (19-2 5:44). Adams then won the 197-pound bracket with a 4-3 decision over Montoursville's Gavin Hoffman, who also wrestled unattached.
West Virginia will travel to Las Vegas, Nevada, for the fourth straight year, as the Mountaineers will compete in the 2017 Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational held on Dec. 1-2. Both days of competition are slated to begin at 11 a.m. ET.
